Is the Community Allowed to create Unreal Tournament (Community Edition)?
A few of the community are wondering if it's alright to create a non-profit, not making any money at all version of Unreal Tournament using Unreal Engine 4 (Much like Timesplitters Rewind). It would be a community project that allows everyone to work together to create an Unreal Tournament and would be stated that it is not developed or produced by Epic in anyway. The community want a new Unreal Tournament and a few of us over on the forums have been talking about bringing that to life. Would that be allowed? We wouldn't sell the project, we wouldn't place ads or anything. It would be a completely free, no profit what so ever experience created by members of the Unreal Engine 4 community. Would Epic be alright with this?
We appreciate your interest in both Unreal Tournament and UE4, but unfortunately we cannot authorize a community driven Unreal Tournament game. But if you want to make a spiritual successor that doesn't use the trademarks or copyrighted content (like characters), definitely go for it.
