Unreal 4.7 + Oculus DK2 crash

Hello

I’m getting a “full crash” of UE Editor & PC when previewing my scene in VR mode (DK2). After some seconds (or a minute) working ok, the Oculus screen and PC screen turns black and the PC either shuts down or restarts (ouch!).

I’ve tried the solution explained at the end of this thread
[][1]
…but it didn’t work :frowning:

Am I the only one? Any help will be apreciated. It’s very frustrating to crash my PC each time I test in VR.

DK2 with v. 6.0.0
GTX 970 STRIX
Unreal Engine 4.7.6

(PS: I’ve recently updated from GTX 570ti, which gave me some 3-4 seconds blackouts from time to time but no crash or reset)

Thanks

Hello ,

I have a few questions for you that will help narrow down what issue it is that you are experiencing.

Quick questions:

  1. Are you using a laptop?
  2. Does changing your Runtime to an earlier version still cause the crash?
  3. Could you provide a detailed list of steps that you are using to cause the crash so that we can try and replicate this issue on our end?
  4. Does this happen when running any other applications with the DK2 on your machine?
  5. Does this issue still occurs in the 4.8 version of the engine?

Ok here are the answers. I’ve normally tried with a scene of mine when it crashes but now instead for this tests I’ve used the SunTemple demo, to use a more standard level.

1 Are you using a laptop?
No, PC i7

2 Does changing your Runtime to an earlier version still cause the crash?
Yes

3 Could you provide a detailed list of steps that you are using to cause the crash so that we can try and replicate this issue on our end?

  • Open de project from the Unreal Launcher
  • In 4.7 and 4.8 projects: Click "VR Preview
  • In 4.6 project: Click on “Play Standalone game” and once opened, click ALT+ENTER
  • Put the casc and look arround inside the VR world.
  • After a time between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, screen flashes once and goes black, and PC suddenly shuts down and restarts.

4 Does this happen when running any other applications with the DK2 on your machine?
I’ve just tried two demos. One has not given me a problem (arround 10 minutes). At a moment screen has gone black, for two seconds, but then has recovered. But the other app has crashed also, after 5 minutes aprox. It’s important to say that this one, the one that crashed, is a Unity application.

5 Does this issue still occurs in the 4.8 version of the engine?
Yes.

Thank you!

Hello ,

After reading over your post it sounds like this issue may not be UE4 specific. This issue could be caused by the limitations of the graphics card in your PC.

I supose you mean some kind of interaction of the card with the rest of the system, because the card is an ASUS Geforce GTX 970, which is the oficial configuration for Oculus as recently published, so it should not have any limitation.

Hello ,

I have been looking into similar issues on other forums and it seems as though their issues where hardware issues of varying kinds. As I said before I do not believe that this issue is specific to UE4. You could try contacting the support team at Oculus.

Make it a great day

I have it mainly while in Unreal, but as I’ve had it also one or twice with a Unity app, I guess maybe you are right. That or some Oculus driver or runtime problem with some specific hard-soft config. I’ve posted in the Oculus site. No answer yet.
Thank you anyway.

Hi ,

The issue could actually be the drivers for your graphics card. The most recent drivers that were released for Witcher 3 for the 600-900 series of GTX cards has been having widespread problems of causing TDRs (Timeout Detection & Recovery) which means that the card itself is becoming unresponsive and tries to recover. If it isn’t able to recover in time, the computer can sometimes restart itself. Can you check what graphics driver you’re using at the moment? This can be found by opening your Nvidia Control Panel. If you’re on a version past 350.12, please try reverting to that driver by downloading it from the following link:

When installing, please be use to use ‘Custom install’ and check ‘Clean Installation’ so that it doesn’t have any issues reverting. After doing this, please restart your computer and see if you’re still experiencing the issues.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Mathew
After reading you I’ve done what you suggested, but I still get the crashes :frowning:

Hello ,

Sorry to hear that suggestion did not solve your issue, I am going to go ahead and select your answer for now. However, If you find a solution to your issue (whether or not it is UE4 specific) could you please make sure to update this post for other users who may run into the issue?
