All of the texture packs I wanted to purchase said they were
not compatible with engine version 4.8.1. … does that mean
I have to buy new texture packs every engine update? Or is
there a way to make these packs work with any engine version?

We test for compatibility when we make a big update to the engine and if something is compatible we mark it down and allow it to be updated to the next version, if not we go back to the seller to have them update their submission to 4.8. You do not have to rebuy the asset packs to get something working with a certain version of the engine. Would you mind telling me what packs you’re experiencing this with so I can take a look into why they may not be working for you?

Hi, the free Game Textures Material Pack by Gametextures.com is only compatible
with 4.7.6 or earlier…and I can’t remember which one I tried to purchase, but wasn’t
compatible…but it was one of the texture packs…
Okay great, try the gametextures material pack now please (it might take a few refreshes of the launcher).
