Grass instances and Lightmap issue

Hello Epic Team,

when i try to build a 15x15quad landscape and put grass on it the lightmap calculation freezes my whole machine, nothing works and the harddrive is running like crazy.
The same when i use dynamic light. Turned off shadows, lightmap resolution is set to 4…nothins solves the issue.
I have grass mesh of about 750 triangles and seed 21k instances in the scene…
What shall i do when i want to put a scene like in the Kite Demo???

I use Version 4.8.

Thanks a lot for helping me.

Peter

Hello PeterLannisters,

When creating a scene like the Kite Demo, or any densely populated open world scene, there are a lot of things you need to take into account before beginning design. The first thing you want to account for is the hardware you are using, and its limitations. The GDC demo was created by a collection of professional developers on very high end machines. They also used a combination of different lighting techniques and features to have everything work together.

The best answer I can give you is to start small and work towards scaling outwards. This way, once you have optimized the smaller sections, you can work on expanding. The answer to your question of how to make something like the Kite Demo can be found on our Youtube page. We created a two part twitch stream that goes through the creation process of our Kite Demo, and will provide you with much insight on what it actually takes to create an open world scene like this!

Cheers,

Thanks so far ,

i´ve seen many scenes made with UE4 and there are huge amount of grass planted. Thought it would be as easy for me to have quick results. Seems to be more difficult then i thought.
Thanks a lot for your answer i appreciate it a lot.

I´ve a i7 2600 (3,4GHZ) and Nvidias GTX 570 with 1,2 GB of Ram.

What do you think about the config i have?

I mean, all the levels in UT4 i can play without any fps break downs in full res. and all set to max.
The KiteDemo runs on my machine with 15fps…

Everything looks fine aside from your GPU. It is not bad by any means, but for game design when your GPU is relied heavily upon, more powerful and newer cards always help. Designing an open World Game takes a lot of time, planning, and effort. It is usually done with a very large scale team of developers, over a fairly long period of time.
