Material Editor crashes UE4

Every time I open material editor, it crashes on me. This slows progress for my game since I can’t make the projectile material.

Hi Overreptic -

Thank you for your report. We have assigned this issue to a member of our support staff, and they will begin investigation as soon as possible.

In the meantime, if you can please look at the following questions and post the answers or requested information here.

  1. Are you using a Mac, PC or Linux?
  2. If you are using a PC, please post a copy of your DXDIAG?
  3. If you are using a Mac or Linux, please let us know your system specifications including video card and currently installed driver?
  4. Are you able to reproduce this crash in a blank project with no starter content?
  5. Can you post the Machine ID from Crash Reporter which appears when the engine crashes? (also make sure that you are sending that information when it does crash otherwise we cannot find the crash in our system.)
  6. If the crash reporter is not showing up, please look in the Windows Event Viewer and find the error message(s) that corresponded to the time of the crash you are experiencing and post the log information here.

Thank You -

Eric Ketchum

Here is the text file for the DXDIAG file here

Where can I find the Machine ID for the crash report on Event Viewer? It does indeed still happen when I make a new project with no starter content.

Hey Overeptic,

It appears you are using an integrated graphics card that comes with the laptop you are using. The laptop itself might run certain programs fine since you have a pretty solid processor, but typically integrated graphics cards are not meant to be used for graphic intensive work. Your dxdiag points to ‘Intel(R) HD Graphics Family’ which means it is more of a generic card, and not geared towards gaming and heavy graphics processing.

I typically do not suggest looking into a new GPU unless it is going to be the user’s largest hurdle when designing in Unreal Engine 4. There are a few things you can try to help your performance when running the editor, but in the end you will want to invest in a more powerful piece of hardware as the editor, especially the material editor, relies heavily on your GPU to perform well.

Engine Scalability Settings

These options will allow you to run the editor at a lower quality, but keep in mind certain features and effects rely on the quality being set to Epic. You can also turn down the ‘Material Quality Level’ from high to low to see if that helps you work within the Material Editor.

Your machine ID as well as your Epic ID are presented to you in your crash log after you experience a crash within the engine. A dialog window will pop up and ask you to describe what you were doing when the crash occurred. We highly encourage our users fill this comment section out as best as they can. These comments are sent with the crash log information so we can get a rough idea of what the users were attempting to do before the crash occurred.

If you have any other questions or need additional assistance please let me know.

Thank you,

I never got a crash report from UE4. Nothing popped up.

It also didn’t help when i turned the setting down to low.

If there is no crash report being generated then it is going to be hard to assist you with your issue. We can usually determine the cause of most crashes while looking at this crash report. We can also deduce that your issue is more than likely hardware related.
