Local versus shared network DDC

I’ve setup a shared network DDC and have setup the UE-SharedDataCachePath variable and pointed it to the share path. It is populated and continuously updated by all my users. However, I see some local DDC is generated under \Unreal\Game\Engine\Engine\DerivedDataCache.

How is the DDC at \Unreal\Engine\Engine used and how is it different from the shared DDC? What is the relationship if any?

It is a hierarchical cache, which you are free to configure any way you like. We use a local cache in addition to a shared cache to radically lower the pressure on the shared cached and improve performance.
