Skeleton Rigging without Maya?

I need to rig a character for use in unreal but I can’t pay for a maya subscription for that alone. I normally use blender. Is there a way to rig a character without the use of maya?

Thanks

Thank you! i’ll check those out. Will this give a skeleton that is compatiable with Epic’s animations?

You can rig a character just fine in Blender, I do it often. Rigify is a good plugin (which comes standard with Blender but may need to be enabled) for easy rigging. Though my preferred method (for normal human meshes) is to use Make Human with the Blender Tools (available as addon from Make Human) and the MHX2 plugin (by Thomas Larsson) then import the mesh from Make Human into Blender and BAM! Fully rigged custom human that’s ready for animations! Give it a shot!

Hope this helps! If it does, please do me a favor and accept the answer by clicking the check mark located below the arrows next to the answer. When done correctly, the answer will highlight green! Thanks and good luck!

I’m not sure if it will be compatible with Unreal animations but they could be, depending on the rig you choose. Remember, to export your mesh and skeleton from Blender to Unreal, you need to export it as an FBX file. FBX isn’t turned on by default so you need to enable it in the addons of the user preferences. The MHX2 exporter is so that you can export a good mesh/rig from Make Human to a usable Blender file. Without that you will need to import it as a dae or obj into Blender but won’t be as easy to work with.
