Unreal Engine crash on startup

Hi,

my project crashes (Unreal Engine stopped working) at ~94% when I try to open it. This is a pretty severe issue for me right now.

Things I have already tried:

  • Deleted Intermediate Folder in Project
  • Took Config + Content Folder and copied it over to a new Folder
  • Deleted Derived Data Cache Folder in Appdata
  • Verified Engine 4.8

Is there more I can do?

Thanks in advance
Peter

Edit: I completely removed Unreal Engine and all of its files and reinstalled it again, copied Content and Config Folder to a new Location and let it build again however I still run into this issue.

Okay I got to roots of this. It seemed to be a corrupted Media File. I believe I set it to play from memory however I am not sure about it. I´ll try to reproduce it.

Hi Peter,

Please copy information in Crash Reporter window when it comes up and paste it in a reply, including MachineID, so we can look that up here. Then and attach log found in project’s Saved\Logs folder.

Let us know if you’re able to narrow it down to a corrupted file. Thanks!

That´s thing. There is no Epic Crash Message. It is from Windows and Log stops in middle of a sentence about building a random assets. I will try to recreate issue this evening.

If you remove potentially corrupted media file from project, are you able to start it?

Yes it is fixed now. I was able to recreate it though.

  1. Set Media File to “Play from Memory”
  2. Save
  3. Close Editor
  4. Reopen

Then Crash reoccurs.

Okay, it sounds like a corrupted file, then, and there’s not much we can do about that aside from replacing it. I’ll resolve this post for now, but if you discover there’s something you’re doing in editor to corrupt a media file, let us know. Thanks!

Yes, I´m doing exactly what I described above to corrupt media file. For me it´s reproducable every time with every file.

Thanks. I’ll get one of our media savvy guys to look into it, and they’ll post here if they have any other questions.

Hey PeterKay,

There was a known issue with certain media files causing projects to become corrupt. This was also linked to streaming option ‘From Memory’, which has now been removed from Media Player framework completely. This fix has been integrated into 4.9 and has been marked as fixed. There are still known issues with specific media files and their playback compatibility, and we are working to have these resolved for upcoming releases.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Cheers,
