Using Tessellation to Smooth Geometry

Hello everyone,

I am looking to smooth out some of the geometry on my motorcycle. What is the best method of using tessellation to smooth out the harsh angles? Am I better off upping the poly count in Maya?

You’re better off just updating your geo in Maya and importing it again. That way you have control over what is getting tessellated and by how much.

Sounds good. Is there anyone out there using tessellation for anything besides displacement?

The PN triangles method works nicely for smoothing out low poly curved surfaces, but I’ve never had much luck with it beyond that. I imagine it would be possible to get nice results if your assets were actually made with it in mind, adding additional edge loops to preserve corners and such.

Interesting, I will give that a try

Using PN triangles does produce a smoother mesh, this is what I was looking for. It isn’t quite the results I was hoping for, but it is a start. I will have to experiment more, find a good balance between uping the poly count in Maya and utilizing tessellation in engine.
