AMD Driver Crash

There was another closed thread that discussed this, but I thought I would start a new one because this error occurs when UE 4.8.3 is open alone. The error happens when I am running through a tutorial from the web site, Using DataTables to Create Data Driven Gameplay in Unreal Engine | Pluralsight.

When I hit play, and click on the example button the system will freeze with an AMD crash…I’ve attached a log file that has some additional details. DXDiag also attached.

Most likely this is an AMD driver issue (its the latest) but not sure why its picking on 4.8.3 when it does… Anyway, here’s the log file, hope it helps.

Hi teak421,

According to AMD’s website, the latest driver for your card is 15.20.1062.1002. Your dxdiag reads 15.200.1062.1003, are you using a beta driver?

I don’t have access to that tutorial. What exactly were you doing when the crash occurred?

Not using the beta… I saw that too in terms of driver version it doesn’t seem right. But, I did download the latest non-beta driver according to the AMD web site.

In terms of the tutorial, I am simply playing the tutorial and clicking on the button… this deletes 18 colored static meshes and recreates them. The tutorial was about using C++ to randomly generate colors… I never got to the point to actually create the C++ code.

Version 4.8.3 isn’t optimized for Windows 10 and Directx 12, however 4.9 will be. Could you download and test version 4.9 Preview 3 and see if the issue persists?

Downloaded and tried… AMD driver crashed even sooner… As soon as I approached the button the AMD went pooh pooh.

I’m linking another users report of a similar issue with the same card.

I know that graphics card is quite new but is there an older driver available that you can roll back to?

Also, what version of Visual Studio are you using?

Visual Studio 2013 Update 5. I’ll check on the driver…and report back success / failure.

Honestly, I think I need to drop this because I’m on 4.8.3 and frankly you guys have said that its not ready for Windows 10. And, Windows 10 is new which means the drivers are immature…that might be it too.

Plus, I’m in the learning stages anyways. Watching TONS of videos, reading, etc. No actual development. By the time I start actual development AMD should have updated drivers and we should be on 4.14.3 …

Thanks for your insight…

Okay, sounds good. If you have this same issue once you decide to start development again, just post back here to reopen this report.

Thanks,

TJ

Got this from the AMD web site… Exact same thing happens to me…

I can vouch for this being the root cause as well. Testing was done with both 15.15 and 15.20 drivers as well as Win7 x64 and Win10 x64. I’ve had no crashes using the DX11 client of FFXIV (borderless windowed) as long as I don’t run any application with hardware acceleration. If I open Firefox, I’m guaranteed to get a black screen and “Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered” error. It may not happen right away, but it definitely happens if I give it time. The weird thing is that the game is still “functioning”. I can hear the music and if I were to hit ESC or any other key that would pull up a menu, I can hear the sound effect for the menu opening.

My son had an R9 280 so I gave him my 380… I’ve not had a driver crash YET. I’ve also searched forums and the new R9 series is having a ton of these types of crashes. Oh well!

We currently don’t have this graphics card in order to do a full compatibility test. Once we do, we will make sure that it is working properly with the editor. Until that time I suggest posting on the AMD forums as well. The issue is likely driver related.

Agreed, I swapped with my Son’s R9 280 card and it works perfectly. Something is whacky with their new card and their drivers. Reviewed forums too… Thanks for your help.
