Opening project puts some tabs in second window

I have say 10 tabs open. I close the project, then reopen, now I have the main window with 4 tabs and a second window on top with 6 tabs. I want it all in one window the same state as I closed the project.

Hey sgehrman,

Have you attempted to ‘Save the Layout’ before closing?

If you have attempted this, and are still experiencing an issue please let me know. A couple of screenshots would also be helpful so I can visualize your screen and the tabs you have opened and docked.

Cheers,

No, I haven’t saved layout. I work on my project, I open some tabs. I close my project. Next day I reopen the project and a few of the tabs are not in a second window, not in the main window. I don’t want a second window. So I have to manually drag those tabs to the main window everytime I open my project.

Hey sgehrman,

Apologies if I was unclear. When you make changes to the Editor’s layout, you will want to save the changes to the layout. This way, when you re-open your project, the previously saved UI will be loaded on start-up.

Use the ‘Save Layout’ option to save these changes.

Cheers,

I don’t think you understand. I open multiple blue print files, they are all in tabs in the main window. These are open files, not editor tabs. The tabs are restored, but there are now two windows instead of one main window with tabs.

Hey sgehrman,

Could you confirm for me that you did try the ‘Save Layout’ option before closing your project?

Another suggestion would be to disable the, ‘Open Asset Editor Tabs in New Window’ option within the ‘Editor Preferences.’

Editor Preferences - Appearance

Let me know once you have attempted these steps in conjunction with one another, and are still experiencing the issue.

Thank you,

Turning off that preference didn’t do anything.

I don’t see how saving my layout would have anything to do with restoring files that were previously opened into tabs as opposed to new windows. That changes every time I open and close my project.

Have you attempted to look into the ‘Editor Preferences’ within the ‘Loading & Saving’ section?

Editor Preferences - Loading & Saving

If this option does not work let me know.

Thanks,

It is still happening with 4.11.0 preview 6. Desktop video and log files:

I think having to use Save Layout before closing the project is not really acceptable, since I would personally forget it all the time. Maybe we need an option to save the layout automatically while closing project?

UPDATE: I also tried to use Save Layout before closing the project. It did not help, the two tabs loaded back on separate windows.

The problem happens even if you set both of the options discussed above correctly. Desktop video and log files of reproduction on 4.11.0 preview 6:

Hey fviktor,

This is actually not a bug, but is working as intended. The ‘Restore Open Asset Tabs on Restart’ will make sure all the tabs that were currently open when you closed the project, re-open.

The other option, ‘Open Asset Editor Tabs in New Window’ makes sure the restored tabs are open in a new window. If you check the first option, and uncheck the second one I have mentioned, your tabs will be restored correctly.

I think you just had a misunderstanding of what each option did, and the default action of tabs when closing and re-opening your project. I just tested this in the preview 7 release and the tabs were restored as expected when the options were checked correctly.

Cheers,

I have the same issue since 2 or 3 versions ago, the fvictor comment is right, test with personal BP added , not just common one.

I just tested this in 4.11.1 binary release and did not have issues with my previously opened tabs being restored upon restart. I checked to make sure the two options I mentioned in my previous posts were correct.

Thanks,

I can confirm that this worked for me in UE4.26.
The UI has changed a little bit and there are more options now but you just have to choose:
Asset editor load location: Main Window
