UE4 Download loop during install (Windows 10)

I’m having an issue getting UE4 to install on my machine. I recently (For unknown reasons still to me) experienced an error on my machine after installing the Windows 10 update that forced me to do a clean reinstall of Windows 10. After downloading the Epic Games Launcher, I attempted to download version 4.8.3 of the engine and after it reached 100% I got a warning that said something along the lines of Install Failed - Installation has failed because of corrupt files.

I deleted the engine and attempted to reinstall it, this time it would get to 100% verification, then start a newer, smaller download (roughly 1.5-2 GB in size) then it just continuously does this. (It also appears that the download size gets smaller and smaller each loop, until an inevitable Install error occurs again). I also uninstalled the entire Launcher and removed anything UE4 and after reinstalling the launcher the issue still persists. I also tried installing the 4.9 preview and got the same issue. Ihave AVG free Anti-virus, but I disabled it while downloading.

Any help on getting the engine to actually install on my machine would be greatly appreciated! I’ve attached my DXDiag information (The Launcher logs exceed the attachment size limit, even while zipped, so I’ve added it to my Google Drive here. I’ve tried following the steps in other similar questions to no success (Unless I just can’t find one that does help me in this situation).

Again, thanks for any help with this! I really want to get back into using UE4 and this has me at a dead halt.

You may want to just completely uninstall UE4, remove it from your system, reboot, and re-download the UE4 binary from the Epic website.

Hi jessiegray88,

Everything I can find on this error points to the file path being longer than 256 characters. This is just a limitation of Windows. Make sure when you reinstall, choose a location that will allow the folder structure to have less characters.

Let me know how that goes.

I’ve already uninstalled the Launcher and redownloaded multiple times to no avail. Same issue. As for the file path, I installed the launcher in the default location the installation file prompts me (C:\Program Files\Epic Games) so the character length doesn’t appear to be the issue.

I’ve got it sorted out now! In case anyone runs into this issue as well, these are the steps I took to get the editor to install:

I realized my network was set to Public rather than private, so I typed “Homegroup” in the search bar next to the start button and hit enter, in the windows that comes up, I then clicked on “Change Network Location” and hit yes when prompted. This turned my network from Public to Private.

I then opened up the properties of the epic games launcher and set compatibility mode to Windows 8 and turned on Run as Administrator. Just right clicking the icon and choosing Run as administrator didn’t seem to work before, but everything installed correctly now. I have a feeling it was mainly my network being set to Public.

But everything looks to be working now!
