Why can I not open or save maps?

I installed unreal4 and I get the following error message if i try to open an example map, or try to save a map.

Failed to load map E:/Unreal Projects/ContentExamples/Content/Maps/StreamingLevels/StreamingLevel5.umap
File is not in any of the following content folders:
C:/Program Files/Unreal Engine/4.0/Engine/Content/
E://Unreal Projects/ContentExamples/Content/

Now, I am assuming it is because of the error in the path “E:\Unreal…”, as you can see unreal has put an extra \ in that default path. I can’t seem to find any way to edit the default path to correct it to "E:"

Any help? Thanks

Hi ruki,

Did the ContentExamples project originally download to your C:\Users\username\Documents\Unreal Projects\ folder, and you moved it manually to your E drive?

no, i followed the installation and didn’t move anything. thanks

edit i just did a fresh install and installed it to E:\Unreal (previous installation was installed on C:\ drive)

I got the EXACT same error when trying to load an example map :frowning:

Hey ruki,

Is this only happening for you when you’re trying to open/save anything in ContentExamples (or any downloaded Content) or does it happen for any project you make as well?

-Steve

Hi Steve,

I cannot create a new project either, so I cannot test if I can save anything I make. I get the error ‘The folder path is invalid’ and the ‘Create Project’ button is greyed out/disabled. This happens no matter which template I select

Could you probably tell us to which path your are currently trying to save it? To the E: ?

the CORRECT path SHOULD be E:\Unreal Projects

Thanks

I did some further digging through the forums and apparently there is no way to change the paths that Unreal uses. So am i completely out of luck then? I can’t use the engine at all

Hey ruki,

Sorry you are running into this issue! We’d like to walk back through getting setup from scratch, if you don’t mind.

Would you mind going ahead and copying any existing project files you’ve made and archive them somewhere that isn’t on your C: drive and then uninstall UE4?

After that, move the UnrealEngineInstaller.msi to your desktop (or re-download from unrealengine it and save it to your desktop, if needed) and then run the Installer from desktop. Have UE4 install to the default location, run the Launcher and let it apply all of your updates (do not re-download any optional packages from Marketplace yet). After you are updated to the latest version, Launch the editor and create a new blank blueprint-based project and leave the creation location as the default location the editor picks.

After attempting to create the new project again, please let us know if you are still getting the same error and we’ll proceed from there.

Thanks,

-Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply.

I have followed your steps and got the same issue, but I did find out a bit more information. Here are the details

I uninstalled UE4 from control panel->uninstall programs. I then deleted any leftover unreal folders in my C:\ and E:\ drives. I then copied my .msi installer to my desktop, and ran the installer from desktop

https://dl.dropboxusercontent/u/15579799/UnrealErrors/ur1.jpg

I then installed to the default location, C:\Program Files\Unreal Engine\

https://dl.dropboxusercontent/u/15579799/UnrealErrors/ur2.jpg

After installation, the launcher automatically downloaded content examples. Then I clicked ‘verify install’ to download the engine. After that, I clicked ‘Launch’ and tried to create a new project. It already gave me the error “The folder path is Invalid”. As you can see in the image below, the path has automatically been set to “E:\Unreal Projects”

https://dl.dropboxusercontent/u/15579799/UnrealErrors/ur3.jpg

I then manually changed “E:\Unreal Projects” to “E:\Unreal Projects” and it let me create the project. I could save and open maps now. HOWEVER, upon closing the engine and re-launching it and loading my project, I COULD NOT load or save any maps for that project, even though I could when I created it. I created a new project again and I can confirm that I CAN save and open maps the first time the project is created, but upon closing and re-loading the project, I CANNOT. I get the following error

Check if your E disk is really called E:// because for example in my case it is called E:/ and I think the UE4 is also just used to E:/ or C:/

It is definitely called E:/ although Unreal keeps thinking it should be E:// and can’t use that directory because it’s invalid

Hey ruki,

Sorry for the back-and-forth on this issue, we’re trying to narrow down what else may be different with your setup that could be causing this problem.

For your Windows setup, have you changed the default target location for your MyDocuments folder?

-Steve

Hi Steve,

Yes, I moved the location of MyDocuments folder to ’ E:\ '. Please note this is NOT ’ E:\MyDocuments ', it is simply ’ E:\ ’

I’m running Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Thanks

Hey ruki,

Try updating to 4.1 and see if you still have this issue – we’ve added in the ability for Marketplace downloads to be able to be installed to a location besides the MyDocuments folder and we think part of that feature should fix the errors you’re getting from 4.0.2.

Let us know if that works for you.

Thanks,

-Steve

Hi, I can’t update to 4.1 as it says I need to ‘subscribe’. I cancelled my subcription last month as it wasn’t working. I don’t really want to pay again especially if it still doesn’t fix the issue. Can you please add a month’s credit to my account or something?

I apologize for the frustrations you have been experiencing. Please contact billing@epicgames to look into what we can do to help you out. In the email, ask for Stacey, recap on the issue you have been experiencing, and mention that Stephen sent you.

We hope that this issue is solved with 4.1, but if not, please let us know immediately and we will escalate to discover a resolution.

Thanks

I can confirm that all my issues have been resolved after a clean install of 4.1. Thank you!

Great! Thanks for letting us know!
