UE4Editor-Cmd.exe Crashes, Application non-functional

I have aggressively tried to resolve this one myself but have not been able to figure out why this application is incredibly unstable / unusable.

Not too long ago when UE4 came the public I was able to successfully use the app however unstable it was with many of its functions. Recently (as of its last update) I can no longer even launch the UE4 (4.0.2) as it continues to crash (UE4Editor-Cmd.exe). I have seen similar posts however their solution is to force Nvidia graphics settings which uses some version of the Nvidia control panel I do not have, so I am assuming it must be specific to mobile / laptop users.

I have tried completely uninstalling it (down to removing every registry entry existent and temp files along with app data entries) for UE4. Re-downloading from the website and completely re-installing the app. I have disabled SLi disabled my quicksync (Intel) I have defined as generic of a 3d application profile in Nvidia control panel as I can manage for this app, but still no launching occurs. I have verified the integrity of the files several times. I have included links to screenshots of the issues in order so you can get an idea of whats happening, including some of my specs to make it easier to understand what is going on.

Hi Konshu,

Thank you for the information. There is one additional log I would like to request which may prove useful in troubleshooting the issue.

Can you please attach the log located here:

C:\Program Files\Unreal Engine\4.0\Engine\Programs\CrashReportClient\Saved\Logs

Thank you

Not a problem, here is the log file. I have noticed a lot of things not found in some of my logs, ive reinstalled several times in the process of trying to get this working, is it possible the launcher is not properly checking if a file exists or not and redownloading it?

CrashReportClient Log

DxDiag

Hi Konshu, are you on beta Nvidia drivers? The latest they have available are 335.23, your screenshots have 337.50. Try running the editor using the non-beta drivers.

Cheers,
Nick

Also - check for a log file here: C:\ProgramData\Epic\Engine\Saved\Logs, there should be a UE4.log file corresponding to your last run, that may have the information we need.

Hey Nick,

I have tried with both sets of Nvidia drivers, beta and non-beta, both yield the same results. As far as the log location, the content is the same as seen above with the (file not found) even though if you navigate to the location the files are there.

I have attached a link to the most recent logfile from mentioned directory. A common theme even through reinstalls, it says (file not found) even though going to the directory shows the files are there its mentioning in the logs.

Logfile 4.18.2014

Ok - are you submitting the crash report when the dialog comes up? I’m having trouble pulling up one corresponding to your crash time.

The issue is some check is having an index out of bounds issue, but without finding the crash report, I don’t know which block of code corresponds to the memory addresses it’s logging exactly

But it looks like there’s an issue opening your derived data cache file (DDC). It’s where we store render data to make loading on the GPU faster.

Could you send me your C:\ProgramData\Epic\Engine\DerivedDataCache\Boot.ddc file, probably through dropbox or google, since I believe it’s too large to upload here. I want to see if I can reproduce it locally.

Cheers,
Nick

I have been submitting crashes however I can generate another one just as easily as running it. This time I will tag one with your name in it so it is easier to find. The crash report submitted just now titled: Crash at Launch – answers.unrealengine.com – Nick Darnell

There seems to be an issue with our crash reporter at the moment (>.<) Anyway, would you mind storing off a copy of C:/ProgramData/Epic/Engine/DerivedDataCache/Boot.ddc and try and find a way to send that to me, dropbox maybe? Then try and delete it and run the editor, that will recreate it if it was corrupted.

Cheers,
Nick

Sure thing, I will have it within the hour.

So Nick, when I am ever in town, I owe you a drink… turns out removing the Boot.ddc does resolve the issue after it recreates it. Not sure why it didn’t fix when I deleted the whole epic directory Below is my file:

Glad it worked, thanks for the file

Seriously you have no idea how you have started my Friday off to a good start. I have been beating my head hours at a time for a while trying to just get going. Mad props and a big thanks. Hopefully you can use this same solution to fix the other launcher issues.
