Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Add me to the list. Running fixup crashes the editor.

What steps can I take to reproduce this on my end. I attempted converting a project from 4.8.3 to 4.9 but did not see this error. Are there any specific steps I can take to reproduce this on my end? Did anything get moved to a new folder before converting? If you could, Gigantoad, can you post your callstack and crashlogs so I can take a look? You can find these at \Unreal Projects\PROJECTNAME\saved\logs.

avatar image Sw1fty Aug 31 '15 at 06:51 PM

I had this issue too. I have my unreal projects on my F drive and Unreal engine installed on my C drive. When opening my project for the first time i selected copy my project and open option, when the project open this the above picture is what I got.

(Side note: After trying to package my project and getting errors about : being an invalid character in my path, so i copied it onto my C drive, and still got this error) [link text][1] I've attached the entire contents of my saved logs folder for this project.

Edit- updated logs at 20:01 uk time for a new conversion so there is only information related to this conversion in them. [1]: /storage/temp/56524-logs.zip

Mostly same errors here - I converted from 4.7 to 4.9 - I have a fair amount of Matinee curves in the level. (Only thing I can think of that would throw animnode errors)

avatar image rogeriooo Aug 31 '15 at 07:30 PM

Same errors here, I've updated my project from 4.8.3 to 4.9. I'm also with a lot of warnings on the message log at the map check, it says that the objects are externally referenced.

avatar image John Alcatraz Aug 31 '15 at 07:35 PM

Yeah, I get the map check warnings too.

avatar image Adam Davis STAFF Aug 31 '15 at 08:59 PM

Do you get the same errors if you create a clean project with starter content in 4.8 and convert it to 4.9? If not, do you have a sample project that is experiencing this error? I'll be happy to take a look. I've tried several project conversions but thus far haven't been successful in reproducing this on my end.

avatar image Nightasy Aug 31 '15 at 09:08 PM

I had this issue occur for me and the only fix I found was to migrate my entire project over to a new 4.9 project. Once I did that the errors went away. Not to say there aren't some other hoodiddy bugs in 4.9 right now that I've come across in a matter of seconds as well but that's how I fixed this particular issue for me.

avatar image Gigantoad Aug 31 '15 at 09:34 PM

So I went into Engine.ini and deleted all those redirects. I expected that would break stuff but everything seems to still work just fine and the errors are gone. Remind us again what we need those redirects for?

avatar image Eddy71 Aug 31 '15 at 10:21 PM

I get same errors after project conversion from 4.8.2 to 4.9

And, when I launch on Mobile Preview, I get this errors with same "ActiveStructsRedirects" problem with my ModifyBones nodes. After this errors, total black screen in preview window (My game is working fine with 4.8.2):

Same here.

avatar image Alexarg Sep 01 '15 at 05:08 PM

Same here, when i get back home will try to delete the redirects from Engine.ini I still don't understand why we must deal with this redirects, i think is the most frustrating thing about the engine, specially combined with revision control.

avatar image spyro Sep 02 '15 at 08:33 AM

Yes, I also don't know why there isn't an id-based system (which then map to the current relative path) or something. These redirectors are a constant source of trouble.

Hey Folks,

This thread is of interest to me. Does anyone happen to have their DefaultEngine.ini config file from before their upgrade?

I'd like to try and understand how this happened so we can get an appropriate fix. Feel free to send it to me on the forums if you wish for it to remain private.

Regards, /Terence

Oh just found nice repro steps... just open the newly released ShowDown demo in 4.9 :D

Hello Terence,

See attachment (had to zip it, INI is not allowed to upload for some reason)

Thank you for the files, @Spyro, and the repro, @Gigantoad.

In the meantime, follow Sw1fty's advice. Just be aware that any active redirects you have added yourself will need to persist.

avatar image Terence.Burns Sep 07 '15 at 12:20 PM

Hi folks,

Unfortunately this is an issue that wont be easily fixed by a point release of the engine soon. Given the volatility of config files, the best solution for now is to follow Sw1fty's guide.

As posted in a related question by JanSordid. This worked for my project.

  1. Back up your Project ;-)

  2. Migrate to 4.9

  3. Close Editor

  4. Open MyGameDir\Config\DefaultEngine.ini

  5. Delete all lines starting with (+|-)Active(GameName|Struct|Class)Redirects

  6. Save and hope for the best

  7. Start Project, all Errors gone

These lines where there before (in the .ini), must have been from a conversion process from a prior Version...

Hi everyone,

Please try the steps Sw1fty suggests here and let me know if these work for your error.

avatar image rogeriooo Sep 01 '15 at 04:40 PM

It worked for me but I'm still getting the warnings on the map: alt text

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

avatar image dj-mindar Sep 16 '15 at 01:03 AM

Same problem here, and this is the best solution I found : Rename your project folder, open your project, close it and rename again to your previous name... It worked perfectly for me.

(from this thread :https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/152144/ue461-externally-referenced-on-basic-map.html)

And the Sw1fty's solution for the ActiveClassRedirects errors worked fine also btw.

avatar image rogeriooo Sep 01 '15 at 05:40 PM

Ok, I've managed to end all the errors by doing this:

  1. Create an empty project on 4.9.

  2. Open your project on 4.9, select the content folder and choose migrate.

  3. Select the empty project content folder and let it migrate the assets.

All issues are gone now, I'll just have to update the old Blueprint nodes to get rid of some warnings.

avatar image eagletree Sep 25 '15 at 06:21 PM

I followed the Sw1fty post which eliminated some of the errors, but left the map check with 3800 errors and a 7 minute load time. I then did what you said here and that cleaned up the mess of external ref errors. Unfortunately, only half the project comes over because migrate doesn't bring over your programs. Did you manually update your C++ code after this?

avatar image rogeriooo Sep 25 '15 at 07:14 PM

Hey eagletree, after further tests with my project some UMG widgets started to show warnings as well, after that I decided to go back to 4.8.3. Lost around 2 days of work with that...

avatar image Alexarg Sep 01 '15 at 10:35 PM

the Sw1fty steps crash the engine on startup for me

**Edit: I made a mistake, actually the Sw1fty steps fixed the problem

avatar image Stormrage256 Sep 07 '15 at 07:58 AM

Hi Adam, do you know if there's a native fix for this in the next 4.9.1 update? I have a toolkit in the marketplace that is ready to be updated, but I'm waiting to see if this'll be fixed in the next update. Sw1fty's solutions worked for my other projects, but there's still no confirmation if this workaround affects any other part of engine functionality. It would be great if someone from Epic could clarify this matter.

avatar image Gigantoad Sep 01 '15 at 04:16 PM

As stated earlier, yes they do.

So I went into Engine.ini and deleted all those redirects. I expected that would break stuff but everything seems to still work just fine and the errors are gone. Remind us again what we need those redirects for?

avatar image Nightasy Sep 01 '15 at 04:51 PM

I did mine over again to help out with tracking this issue. Doing exactly as Sw1fty suggests worked for me. All my errors went away and everything is working correctly.

avatar image spyro Sep 02 '15 at 08:46 AM

Sw1ft's solution worked for me, too. Removed all those redirectors in the .ini and all the errors went away.

Having the same problem. Is Sw1ft's solution the way to go? or should I wait for a fix?

After troubleshooting this issue when Converting from 4.9 to 4.10, we found that all we had to do to fix the issue was delete the Engine.ini from DefaultGame\Version1.0\Saved\Config\Windows. The problem seems to come from the line: Paths=../../../../../../Users/Name/Documents/Unreal Projects/My_Project/DefaultGame/Version1.0/Content. It is still referencing the old project name.

We haven't tried renaming the path, which should also work. Instead, we deleted it and reopened the project. The Engine.ini file was created automatically and the errors were gone.

Hope this helps, mg
