Editor have memory leak in two of my project (all)

after some minute inside the editor doing stuff the editor become slower & slower

memory usage by editor grow up infinitly i have to kill the process to relaunch it and work again on my project :o

dont know how to help you to find the leak but just telling there is memory leak in two of my project, that i didnt had with 4.8

maybe some other people have this problem too?

Hi ,

Does this occur in a clean, blank project with no additional content or is it limited to these projects? Were these projects updated from another version? What steps did you take before these memory leaks occurred?

the two project where this occur where updated from 4.8 version

i cant tell you steps i do before this occur, i just do many things, i open blueprint, i delete and add some content, i launch game preview in editor, etcc and while i am working the editor become slower&slower memory usage go up to 1gb and more

both project are for android, maybe i will figure out something i do in particular that proc this memory leak

i will try to work on this project keeping an eye on memory and if i found something i will tell you

Hi ,

Do you have any additional information that could help me to locate the source of these memory leaks?

hi i couldnt reproduce this yet, i had some memory leak during 2 days, and now it seem to be ok

probably mark this as resolved

Hi ,

I’m happy to hear this is no longer occurring for you. I’ll mark this as answered for tracking purposes. If you experience this error again, please comment and let me know, I’ll be happy to take another look.

Ok so i have this memory leak again (and in a new other project i started)

it still look like random for me when it happen, but it seem to be more often happening when i work with my game instance blueprint opened and working with array variable referenced by game instance

and the leak happen so fast, its like editor run fine for seconds, then when the problem appear BOOM memory usage is over 9 000 000K (not the dragon ball z running gag about its over 9000 ^^) and run so slow (normal memory usage is 1 400 000K when editor run good)

i wish i could identify what action does this but i still dont know, i know for sure i have 3 project where this memory leak happen with gameinstance and array inside

dont have the step to reproduce this, if i find it, i will tell you, i wont bother u anymore, u can still mark this a resolve so u wont waste your time

Hi ,

It certainly isn’t a waste of my time if there is a problem we can potentially address I assure you. Does the editor crash when this leak occurs? If so can you go to \Unreal Projects\PROJECTNAME\saved\logs\ and post the most recent crash logs here so I can take a look? Additionally, can you post a copy of your dxdiag so I can take a look?

Would just confirm increased memory leaks since 4.9 as well. I just went away from my PC and after about an hour one of the projects (started at 4.7 → 4.8 → now 4.9) eat up about 7GB of ram which started at about 700MB at first while just showing the idle level editor viewport. Before I went away I finihed creating a new 2D blendspace and retargetting a few animations. If I start it now it seems constant at about 957MB.

As far I remember I had the last ram issue while playing around with the infiltrator demo and I wasn’t sure if it would ever stop eating ram after checking various materials. I was afraid the materials could cause this hunger at my project so imported it into a blank 4.9 project first and it seemed friendly so I put it into my other project (that had the leak now) as well (and did not notice any issue the last days).

If I start it now it even looks pretty constant so I’m not sure how to trigger this but I never had such issues with 4.8 (or before testing the infiltrator demo). Anyway I started to urgent stop projects (infiltrator, shooter demo and now my own project) because they seem to take incredible amout of ram for some reason and make my PC almost unusable slow.

editor never crashed, memory leak happened many time (more than 20) and i had to kill the process to close it faster, even i can close the editor the normal way but it took longer as it run slow as hell

and as neutronux posted below, i never experienced memory leak with my project in 4.8, and now it happen often on 4.9 in 3 different project

you can find my dxdiag in the file attached to this comment

Hi ,

I’ve attempted this on my end but unfortunately could not reproduce the crash. What specific actions are you taking just before the memory leak starts? You said you have a game instance open with an array in it, are you doing anything in particular with the array? Do you have it open on the same monitor or a separate monitor from your editor window? Are you moving any windows around? Are any other windows open besides the game instance and the editor?

hi sorry i dont even know myself when the big memory leak occur exactly, and today the leak appeared two times without the game instance blueprint opened, but i was woking on some widget blueprint (user interface)

it really look like random for this moment, because i can work with widget for hours, without problem, and then today i had 2 leak while working on widget only

when the editor run slowly i look at the memory used and it is often ~9 000 000k and it stop to 9 000 000k, and sometime it goes overs 11 000 000k

and my projects are basics 2d games, without big confusing material or big skeleton mesh, just simple texture and sprites and widget for user interface

at this time i may suspect widget blueprint doing those leak as i use them the most in my three project

sorry for this poor help :>

and u may mark this as resolve or waiting for more information so u can help other people, i will be back here for sure when i found a good “how to reproduce this step by step”

Hi ,

I will mark this as answered for now. Once you have additional information please feel free to post here and I’ll be happy to take another look.

UE4 4.10 editor still causes this issue here. Usually it is not crashing but the editor eats up to 6 GB ram… a few seconds later 12 GB ram … drops down quick to 700 MB … 1.8 GB and back to 6 GB is writing the hole time something on the HD with about 9MB/s. I’ve no clue what happens here as the game is not running in this time and the hole project folder on the HD is way slimmer (about 2.7 GB). But probably that writing of the UE4 process (that should be idle in the editor in that time) is a clue regarding some auto-save. If I restart the project it’s pretty stable consuming 1GB ram (at least for a while).

Hi Neutronux,

  • Do you have any specific reproduction steps I can take to recreate this on my end?
  • Does this occur in one project or does it occur in a clean, blank project with no additional content?

I think it does not occur in a blank project and I could not reproduce it 100% at my PC … but it happened lots of time since months now as far I remember even with the shooter demo and after importing some materials of the infiltrator demo into a third person test project. Most time if my PC gets incredible slow I open the task manager now and search for a unreal editor process that eats up everything on RAM that is there. I had 8GB ram and it took 7 GB and upgraded to 16 a few weeks ago and now it takes 12 GB.

I could not remember that this happened before 4.9
It happens most time if the editor is idle. For example if I leave my PC and come back after a hour or if I do something in other programs like modelling or painting, … and minimize the unreal editor in meanwhile.
I think most of the time I had more than one UE4 project open (not running and nothing compiling or baking or streaming but idle in editor).
It does not look like a classic “memory leak” to me because memory usage in task-manager is jumping pretty crazy … nothing in my project is somewhere near 12GB … but it takes it… drops to 700MB… and quickly eats again lots ram. After restarting the same project it’s ok… for a while. So I still think it could have something to do with autosave.

Do you have any specific editor windows open when this occurs? Is it just the viewport open? If you turn off autosave do you see the same error occur?

I can confirm absolutely the same behaviour as has Neutronux.
Version of the engine is 4.10.2. I have created new blank blueprint project and played with blueprint editor (I’m learning blueprints now). So, the scene was really simple. The engine had consumed 12Gb with significant performance issue.
