Built Geometry Long Freezes

Hi,

Every time i move any type of geometry brush or volumes i have a long freeze in the engine. Moving an object would normally take 1-2 mins to do, moving vertices would take roughly around 2 mins and to undo something would make the engine freeze for 5-10 minutes. Why is this happening? would it be my specs? When I’m moving static meshes i have no freezes, the freezes only happen with built geometry. Everything else works fine, no slowdowns even with my current specs.

My specs:
Windows 7 64 bit
GTX 660 4GB
i5-2310 CPU 2.9Ghz (4 CPUs)
8GB Ram

Have you been able to reproduce this in a fresh project with no additional content? I have thus far been unable to reproduce this freezing effect on my end. Are you using any particular brushes that are causing the problems?

Hi, I have made a new level and tried and had no freezing. It’s most severe when moving built geometry in my own scene be that as the whole brush or moving vertices using edit mode though it is really severe when undo-ing anything which has been editted with edit mode(10 min freezes), sometimes happens with volumes such as blocking volumes but that’s not too severe as undo-ing.

Not sure why it’s happening, tried to remove my light mass volume, pre computed visibility volume and my post processing volume, also tried to turn down my editor graphical settings to low but doesn’t change anything.

Are you building the entire scene or just geometry? If you have a large scene it will take a bit longer even with just geometry, however if you are building lighting that is what is increasing the build time overall.

Hi, sorry for the long replies. My apologies, by Built Geometry i mean the meshes you can drag into your scene and alter, I’m not sure if they are still called BSP but that’s what are causing the freezes. I will attach screenshots below to explain the problem I’m getting. I’m not sure if this is related to my specs or drivers or anything but I have updated my nvidia drivers and nothing has changed, I believe it is some bug in the engine but not sure if anyone else is experiencing this same problem. I mean for such a short distance which geometry/vertices to have been moved (in terms of the screenshot) i don’t know why it’s causing such a huge freeze.

Edit: Even if i build my scene regularly, nothing changes in terms of freezing.

These are still BSP brushes, have you used just the build geometry feature? If you click the dropdown menu of the build button it is located there. By clicking just “build” you will build paths, lighting, geometry, etc.

Hi, yes, I stated above even when I build my geometry in my scene(and the rest) regularly I still get freezes. Can provide any other details/record and instance of a freeze with a video if need, I am convinced that this is a bug in the engine, maybe possibly because UE4 has just been released I’m not sure.

Try turning off update bsp automatically. This is located in Edit>EditorPreferences>Miscellaneous. There is a known bug with this specific feature that is causing slow and freeze issues. Please let me know if this fixes your freezing issue when you click build geometry. Thank you!

Just turned the feature off and awesome! No more freezes, this solved my problem, thank you very much for your help, you have no idea how relieved i am :slight_smile:

Hi, I am having this problem now as I tried to built more geometry in my existing scene my screen freezes until the geometry is loaded. I tried the solution but the problem with that is I am not anymore able to delete my geometry which I am building not able to move geometry to new location its just the boundary that’s only moving and click somewhere back it just stays there and with delete its only deleting the pivot.
I am also adding the screenshots . So , please help guys.

Hi Akash,

This is expected behavior. Once you turn off the auto update you will have to manually build geometry to see any changes take effect. You can do this by going to the dropdown menu next to the “build” button and press “Build Geometry”, see if this works.
