Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Unreal Engine install launcher fails. OSX

I'm on Mac 10.9.2, I downloaded the UnrealEngine.dmg installer, and when I open it, I can see it's launched in the top bar, but nothing shows on screen.. and I have to force terminate it, I can't just quit. If I try again, it might just say that it ended instead(crashing).

It seems like people are "crashing" a lot further in the process than me, I'm not sure what might be the cause?

You mean nothing shows on screen when you open the .dmg file you downloaded or when you open the Unreal Engine app you copied from dmg file to Applications folder?

The unreal engine app

avatar image ZeroEightSix STAFF Apr 16 '14 at 02:24 PM

OK, so please launch it, then open Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities, find Unreal Engine Launcher on list of processes, select it, then use View->Sample Process to generate info with details about what is it doing, save it as text file and attach here.

Also, what Mac model do you use?

Thanks. Looks like the app might be stuck at the very beginning (although I cannot be 100% sure), processing some system events, before even getting to our code :/ I don't have any idea what can be wrong, I'm afraid, so I'll have to ask you to try a few more things.

  • Do you have any external hardware connected to your Mac? If you do, could you retry after disconnecting them?

  • Maybe some software is somehow conflicting with our app, so maybe you could try quitting everything, restarting your Mac and trying launching Unreal Engine app with no other apps running.

  • Do you have UnrealEngineLauncher folder in your Documents folder?

Also, how long did you wait before giving up and force quitting the app? I guess you gave it at least few minutes, but want to make sure.

Thanks!

I had several things connected, and I disconnected them all. Close all running software and restarted.

Yes, I do have the UnrealEngineLauncher folder in Documents.

After trying to launch it several times, I forced quit, relaunched and let it sit for about 5 min. From just being open and up to 5 min, if I tried quiting the app, nothing would happen. Forcing it was my only option. If I continue to force quit the app and reopen, it gives me a crash, so I do have a log for that. Not sure if it will help, but none the less.

It's crashing because it failed to read some info about your mouse :( Give me a couple of hours or so, I'll try to prepare a patch for you. Sorry for trouble!

avatar image Derphouse Apr 16 '14 at 03:53 PM

I see.. I just tried unplugging it though, and using my wacom instead, and it's still happening. :/

avatar image ZeroEightSix STAFF Apr 16 '14 at 04:07 PM

Is the crash log the same when you use wacom instead of mouse?

avatar image Derphouse Apr 16 '14 at 04:12 PM

yup.. looks like

avatar image ZeroEightSix STAFF Apr 16 '14 at 04:23 PM

Interesting. Something is detected as a mouse, but cannot properly respond to a query about vendor name etc. That's all I can tell based on the crash log. I know how to work around that in code, so I should be able to fix that today, but I don't know what workaround could I suggest for you in a meantime.

Well thanks in any case :)

I am having the exact same issue as the poster describes. However I'm on OSX 10.9.4 and trying to Launch UE 4.4.0.

How do I solve this issue. The quick fix posted above is dated April'14, for a different version of UE.

Thanks for the help!

Hey mossian,

Sorry you're having some trouble getting started. Please give us as much information as you can as requested above, starting with:

OK, so please launch it, then open Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities, find Unreal Engine Launcher on list of processes, select it, then use View->Sample Process to generate info with details about what is it doing, save it as text file and attach here.

Also, what Mac model do you use?

Thank you!

Sorry for delay. Please download these two files: http://cdn.unrealengine.com/qfe/QFE-FromCL-2034640-Shelve-2048959.zip http://cdn.unrealengine.com/qfe/UnrealEngine_QFE_2039063.dmg

When you get them, install Unreal Engine app from UnrealEngine_QFE_2039063.dmg to your /Applications folder, then open Terminal app and type:

 open /Applications/Unreal\ Engine.app --args -noselfupdate

-noselfupdate argument is important because without it the app would update to official version that doesn't work for you. I will update this thread once a new official build containing this fix will be available.

After you download the engine using Unreal Engine app, unzip QFE-FromCL-2034640-Shelve-2048959.zip and run the patch installer it contains. After that you should be able to use the editor etc. You can start the editor by launching it directly: /Users/Shared/UnrealEngine/4.0/Engine/Binaries/MacUE4Editor.app.

Sorry for inconvenience. We should have a new build very soon, so this is only temporary solution.
