Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.

Office Holiday

Epic Games' offices will be on holiday from June 22nd to July 7th. During this period support will be limited. Our offices will reopen on Monday, July 8th. 

UnrealPack hangs during project packaging on MacOS

I am making a packaged project under macos using latest xcode and 10.11 macos library i think. It succesfully compiles project files, cook them, but hangs on making pack file. Log file displays that some files are packed and than it stops. Before I was I able to cancel and restart build and somehow packaging passes. But now it hangs after packing som internationalization files. And that's all.

I switched off packing files and managed to make a build. But it is huge.

The same project builds under Windows flawlessly.

Yata,

In order to better assist you, could you please upload the output logs from your packaging process on the Mac? Which version of Mac OS are you on? Are you working in 4.9.1 or 4.9.2?

Packaging log simply stops at some point and that's all, no other error are reported. Are there any other logs I can look for, Samantha?

I am using 4.9.1, on MacOs 10.10, with latest xcode update macos sdk 10.11

Yata,

Could you try to upgrade to 4.9.2 and package again? Once the packaging process has failed, open up the output log section and copy and paste it into a notepad so that you can upload it as a text file.

Since the issue is not occurring on an original version of the engine, and it is indeed happening on a custom built version of the engine, then it is not an issue or bug that we will be able to assist with. We do not support custom engines or their bugs, only bugs found within our version of the engine is able to be tested further.

Whether you support it or not, this is clearly some issue with the Unreal Build system, since multiple people are reporting it. Our game cooked fine on Mac until upgrading to 4.9.

Hi all,

We simply don't have the manpower to support everyone who has adjusted engine source. We can support vanilla versions of the engine released officially, and we can investigate issues on our GitHub builds, but once source is edited we're getting into an area outside our range, and if we can confirm that this does not occur in the vanilla engine, there's nothing we can do at that point.

Please feel free to discuss the problems you are facing with each other; I hope you can resolve the issue! But keep in mind that a fix for one edited source build might not work for another, and that's basically where we're stuck. Best of luck!

Ben, Yes, we understand there is not much you can do now. I'll try to build a clean GitHub build tomorrow and report if the problem occurs.

Ben, I build source code from 4.9 branch and it worked perfectly. And we found what was causing the problem. But it is hard to tell which changes interfered with UE tools. There is definitely some bug hidden in tools-editor pipe communication. I've run UnrealPack with parameters supplied by the editor from command line and it worked without an issue.

Thanks for the additional info. Our tools are designed to communicate with our engine. If you change one or the other and that doesn't work anymore, it's not really a bug on our end.

You understand, though, Ben, that we are not changing that part of the engine? We are creating c++ projects the way that your documentation instructs, building the tools the way your documentation instructs and running everything the way your documentation instructs. No one is going in and fiddling with the way that the editor communicates with anything.

I understand, but if you have modified the engine at all, it is no longer something we can support. If you find that there is a bug that occurs with an unchanged engine while resolving this issue, we can go from there. For now, if making a new project in your version of the engine displays this issue but a new project in the vanilla does not, we have to assume this isn't something we can test for.

EDIT: please note that this policy does not include Epic GitHub commits. If all you've done is added an official CL from us, let us know which one and we can go from there. Keep in mind that many commits are not entirely inclusive, and some changes required multiple commits to be implemented.

Hi Ben,

I just want to add another voice here quickly: I am seeing the same thing when porting a plugin from the top down prototype to our real game, this happens in our real game with a large amount of content being pak'ed, but I did not get this hang when doing the exact same build process on this Mac with the top down small game. It seems to be a real bug in UnrealPak that maybe only shows up with a larger production sized game, or only with content with long names, or who knows what; but I concur, it's a real bug and should be investigated. Maybe someone here can share their project to repro. it on your end, if not, I can probably do so on UDN to staff if that's the only way it will get attention here. Let me know. Thanks!

For those who are having an issue that is related to UnrealPak but it's not due to an edited version of the engine, please create a new AnswerHub post. Yata's issue was not on an original version of our engine, it was modified therefore, we were unable to help them.

Less of a fix than a work-around, since I don't know exactly what is happening, but...

Commenting out the following line seems to avoid the problem:

 UE_LOG(LogPakFile, Display, TEXT("Added file Source: %ls Dest: %ls"), *Input.Source, *Input.Dest);

(in function ProcessCommandLine, UnrealPak.cpp line 482)

Don't know why that line is failing -- my guess is some kind of memory overwrite error. The symptom of this problem was not a crash, but an infinite looping of the "for" loop containing the line. It's a very simple piece of code. The only way I think you would loop infinitely there is if something was slamming your memory. Perhaps it's a buffer overrun because of a too-long string (printing out two long paths in a single log call). Or maybe it's some strange utf8 vs utf16 issue.

Very strange. Maybe Epic could look into it?

It is not of buffer overrun of some long string as I can tell. It is constantly writing to pipe which is read by Unreal Editor. For some reason the pipe breaks, and buffer became filled with data, which is not read out by an editor - editor thinks that it is empty, as read function returns -1 and errno 0x23.

I see, so once the pipe fills up, perhaps there is a timeout of some sort before the next log call can be processed.

Definitely what I was observing was that there was no particular crash within the fflush call -- it just seemed to be taking an incredibly long time. I was blaming xcode, but perhaps there is a timeout coming into play that causes a long delay when we try to write to a full pipe.

I tried to figure out how material is linked to a mesh, there are no nodes using mesh SM_GodRay_Plane. But managed to get rid of them by setting Material Interface: Preview Mesh.

I think it's a bug, trying to package preview meshes into the game.

Samantha, I will write later if it helped to package macos build.

Could you please try to package a blank template without any starter content and another blank template with starter content? Please let me know whether or not those two templates package or not.

I just tested a sample project on my Mac and I have been able to package without any difficulties. Could you please try to delete your Saved and Intermediate folders from your project folder and try to package again?

Actually i long deleted them and they are not shown in Content Browser. But a packed into project. It's weird

Thank you for providing me with the log. Looking over the log provided, it looks like the end is cut off? I see a few places where some blueprints or animations aren't set up correctly however I don't feel that is the total cause. Could you please upload the full logs for me?

No, Samantha, it is complete. It stops on autosaving the project, and packing some internationalization files. Maybe they are related?

Can you check if the UnrealPak process is still running after logs stop, it should be as we do not see any crashing within the logs. You should also be able to look at the UnrealPak logs located in: Engine/Programs/AutomationTool/Saved/Logs or in Engine/Programs/UnrealPak/Saved/Logs.

Hi Samantha,

I have tried to build a racing game template project. And it i hanging on the same phase. Actually I think it may be connected to a low free space on my hard drive. I'll try to remount mu 2Tb drive as readwrite and will check another time. )

Hi, Samantha

I rechecked everything. I can build and pack Advanced Vehicle template project with original 4.9.2 version, but not with my custom build engine version. Which is double disappointing. I tired to rebuild UnrealPak, UnrealCEFSubProcess and some other tool but without any luck. UnrealPak is not crashing and it is in process list, but I cannot attach a debugger to it - Xcode crashes when I try.

I am ok to live without packing, but here are all logs I gathered, maybe I'll have time to watch them.

Is there any update on a fix to this? We are also getting this problem -- a hang while running UnrealPak.

I can confirm that the process is still running. No logs seems to have been generated for it (looked in Engine/Programs/AutomationTool and Engine/Programs/UnrealPak, as suggested above).

We are also running a custom build of the game editor.

Yata, did you figure out a work-around?

No, not at all. I even don't know what to do. Maybe copy build tools from distributed build, and use them instead of those which are downloaded by Setup.command.

Logs are in ~/Library/Logs/... do not remember the exact path, not where Samantha told.

According to mine UnrealPack hangs somewhere in the middle of packing some Slate png's. Some time after it is actually hanging in the Editor.

Maybe it is some path related problem. I think what i'll do tomorrow - try to replace standard distribution with mine and see what will happen.

Disla, what MacOS version do you use?

Because I am building on some "not so very original macos on hardware not bought in Mac Store ;)" so I think there can be issues with this also...

I actually found where it hangs - FeedbackContextAnsi.h line 77.

hangs for some reason. Don't know why.
