Strange texture asset appears after creating a new level

How to reproduce:

  1. Create a new, empty project and turn on “Generate Mesh Distance Fields” in project settings
  2. Create a new Landscape and save the level. Along with new level asset, a strange Texture2D asset will be created, with name like “Texture2D_69_BaseColor” or similar.
  3. You can delete this texture (it shows no references), but then it also deletes the saved level!

It’s especially problematic when duplicating/renaming existing level - after restart, these texture assets throw an errors that they can’t find a level asset, because they still pointing to its old name… Even if there is no visible references between them.

Hi ,

I was able to reproduce this on my end and have entered a bug report, UE-22256, to be assessed by the development staff.

Hi! This has happened to me today too. I’m doing a scene with a landscape and with Generate Mesh Distance Fields enabled, and it appeared a texture linked to the map. I deleted the texture and it deleted the map. Luckily I could rescue a previous version from the autobackups.

I’m using UE 4.12.4. Is there any progress with this bug?

This issue is still marked as unresolved. I can increase the community interest on the report, but cannot guarantee this issue will get fixed for the next upcoming release.

We appreciate your patience while we get this issue resolved.

Thank you,
