Paper 2D exposure PP despite settings

Hi,

So I’ve recently picked up UE4 with the intention of using Paper 2d. I’ve run into an issue where the display I’m getting while running the game differs from that of my workspace, with colours looking muddied and ugly. I’ve tracked down the issue, and tried everything suggested as fixes, but it seems to be the same issue in this video: - YouTube that user Jason Li has brought up in the past.

I followed his posts, and tried suggested fixes, but to no avail. The most recent news I saw on this was from November last year, where a staff member suggested changing to the perspective view to solve this problem until a bug fix was implemented. Unfortunately this has not solved the problem for me either, so I wonder if this has been fixed, and I am missing something, or the problem actually applies to both orthographic and perspective views.

I really want to continue with this engine, but this problem is doing my head in. Please help!

Hello FindersCreepers,

I would like to get a little more information from you.

1.) Can you link a screenshot of this issue?
2.) If you would link me a copy of your DxDiag?
3.) Does this happen in a clean project in 4.9?

We recently exposed projects setting to disable auto exposure and other things in the project setting/rendering. Even if you don’t have that you can set the min and max of the eye adaptation to 1 to disable it (the checkboxes in front of it need to be enabled to have effect). You can use the VisualizeHDR showflag to see whats going on with the eye adaptation settings.

After I have this information I will be able to narrow down what is causing this. Also try this troubleshoot and see if that fixes the issue.

Thank you for the reply

I bumbled about and found that while displaying tonemap and eye adaptation while in perspective view reproduced the problem outside of the play/launch mode. I then tinkered with some settings after sweeping through various threads on the internet. I did manage to alleviate the problem pretty well by following this advice Disabling Tonemapping - Rendering - Unreal Engine Forums and then setting things in film to 0 or 1. This is what it currently looks like (I don’t have an image from before sorry, but it was very similar to the link in my original post).

As you can see I’ve gotten it looking MUCH closer to the source image now, but it’s not quite ideal. None of the show >post processing tickboxes replicate the difference in the perspective view workspace, so I don’t know what else it could be. If there’s no obvious suggestion for what could be causing the difference, I’ll settle for this, but it would be great to get it 100%

As for the new project, I started from the 2d platformer template, which has the same issue (as does the Kenney 2d demo template). Perhaps it’s an inherent setting they share in common> A blank new project with the chairs does the same kind of effect with tonemapping (that is the same effect as before I changed the film settings).

So I tried to reproduce this issue in the Paper2D Side Scroller. What I did was open a new project. made sure that within the show > post processing > all of these options were turned on. I saw no muddled textures. I then played and did not see a change.

This is the result in perspective.

This is the result while in play/launch.

I’m not quite sure what is causing this issue. It sounds as if you have found a semi-viable solution as you are able to get closer to what you want. The last thing I can do is try and test this on my end to narrow it down further.

If you are willing, you can link me a dropbox of your project. For that I will need your .uproject and your Content and Config folders from your project settings.

If you are are uncomfortable linking here you can go to our forums and send me a Private Message. This is done by go to the forums, going to the Advanced settings, and typing in my name for the User Name tab.

I won’t bother using up more of your time if there’s nothing obvious coming to mind. It’s at the point now I can easily adjust source images to match the desired outcome when necessary.

Thanks again for the reply and have a nice day

Not a problem. If this does happen again please feel free to post again. I’ll pick this issue back up at that time.
