Glass wool material

Hi all

Need some idea how to make nice looking the “Glass wool” material like on image. Without solid looking structure and old school methods like geometry triangles with alpha blends. Any ideas?

Hey Andy_rst,

So I came up with something fairly close.

Steps to reproduce:

Note: This method can be costly as far as poly count goes.

1.) Create a mesh inside of an external Modeling Program. In my case I used paint effects inside of Maya.
2.) Converted the paint effects to polygons and exported as a .fbx.
3.) Imported this .fbx into UE4.

This is the part where you will need to adjust your material in a way that works best for you.

4.) Arranged a number of the .fbx until it looked close to what I wanted.
5.) Created a Translucent Material.

I will post the material and result below.

I ended up making a duplicate of this material and adjusting the Fresnel Parameters in order to achieve variation.

This is the result.

There is a number of methods but this one feels the most realistic because it is made up of individual fibers. This method is opposed to that of a blob mesh with a single opacity mask.
