Very low frames per second while using laptop

From my experience performance on mobile gpus is very poor.
You should check out the engine scalability settings under quick settings in the editor. Make sure you set Shadows to low and in case you still need more performance you can play with the other settings. The resolution scale slider provides a good performance boost although that will notably reduce image quality.

Also make sure you have the latest drivers.

I am having really low FPS when running the UE4 editor, even for a new project that only contains the map with the 2 chairs and table.

By low FPS i mean ~ 5 - 6 FPS.

I am running on a Dell XPS 17, 12GB Ram, Nvidia GT555M GPU (3GB ram).

Is anyone else running on a similar spec? are you also getting similar results? is there something wrong with my setup?

I have alienware ALX system whit core i7 3,4 ghz and 12 gig ram are 8550 hd cross fire 3 hd ram.
I had the same problem and I did reinstall and bow it works except when I have a terrain and paint 10 trees I end up on 0,3-0,4 fps but if I add them one and one it works.
I now have around 60-80 fps usually in the editor

So, your solution was to reinstall? i am not sure how that may help anything (from a technical viewpoint)

What’s your processor? From the looks of the specs and model, the machine is about 3 years old. Also, the 555M is a bit older of a GPU, and that might be part of the bottleneck. What speed is your RAM? It may help to post the machine specifics.

I got Q9300, GF9600GT 512MB, 4GB RAM, and i got 20-30FPS on blank level (With skybox and 20-10FPS on demos (except cave demo which is only one that bearly runs on me), got 40FPS on mobile examples so definitly it’s not your specs, or else you CPU is really weak which you didnt list it, i got kind of old quad-core but it might preform better then some low end dual cores. Do your CPU got GPU functions? if yes then check if it switch to nvidia, might be also some power menagment economic features which slow downs hardware do you laptop battery holds longer.

The laptop is indeed ~ 3 years old. It’s the XPS 17 L702x model. RAM speed is clocked at ~ 657 MHZ (according to CPU-Z).

CPU is core i7-2720QM

I am on latest drivers. Also played with scalability settings, didn’t do anything.

Well sorry to tell ya but your gpu is just too weak. A friend of mine managed to get his 5fps to about 17 by adjusting the mentioned settings but his gpu was a newer model so you might want to replace that gpu or move to a desktop for unreal engine 4.
