Very Long Freeze-up and Shader Compiles When Applying New Materials, Objects

I don’t believe this is a GPU issue, as it handles UT just fine. Anytime I try to drag or open a new prop or material, everything freezes up for a while, followed by a very lengthy compile. Double clicking a new tree caused a 20 minute freeze. I read there was a usage section with flags to try unchecking, but I can’t find that either. Please help, thanks.

Steps: I create a new project, add in any free content from the marketplace, double-click one of the new materials or materialed objects, and the project freezes up. After minutes of freezing, I then apply the material, and a long compile begins on hundreds of shaders. The preceding freezing is the worst though.

Ensure that the editor is using the Radeon graphics card instead of the integrated HD card.

What are your scalability settings set to? While your pc technically meets our minimum recommended specs, you will probably have to run on a lower scalability setting for better performance.

True. I’m going to merge my hard drive partitions, beginning to suspect something here.

Have you seen any improvement since merging partitions?

There may have been a slight performance increase after updating & optimizing some things, installing the essential intel management engine & rapid storage technology software, increasing page file, etc. but I’m still getting very long freezes for first time uses of materials & textured meshes. I recently got this computer used with Windows 10 already installed from W7. I may have to get a fresh copy and reformat, idk. It just doesn’t seem right since it handles everything else well.

I’ve tried everything set to low, but it doesn’t help with the freeze. If I try to drag in a new tree, oven, etc, 1-20 minute freeze, but then I can place as many as I want and zoom around the map just fine.

Try dragging in a simple cube from the basic placement list into a blank level. Do you see the same freeze? Is it only happening with custom assets?

I can drag a blank cube and texture it with starter pack material with no freeze. If I were to try and drag a marketplace material onto it, the editor will freeze for bit. Extra long freezes with textured meshes. After that, I can apply them and zoom around the map no problem, minus the long shader compile times.

Which assets are you attempting to move into your project? It’s possible the long build times/freezing you are seeing is because the engine has to compile all of those new assets and textures. If you go here:

Follow the steps to "Building a Derived Data Cache), it may help. Specifically do the Local DDC if you are working by yourself. Please let me know if this helps you.
