Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Simplify "replace references" for materials

Hello Community!

TL:DR = How to exchange imported materials from FBX files with already existing materials using a more simple / advanced time saving workflow than current option of selecting two materials, right click > asset actions > replace references action..

Long version:

I am seeking for some help regarding a problem i try to solve for some weeks now.

My current workflow working with game asset import is the following:

Here comes the big hurdle i need to solve:

We're using predefined Material instances for certain things like concrete, glass, etc.

When i import the FBX, i already import standard materials with different colors - these need to be replaced. The main issue i am experiencing is that i can't select actors by material because they're already sitting inside the blueprint. Replacing materials step by step would take ages since there are dozens of custom objects.

At the moment, i am replacing the imported standard material with the material of my choice for certain objects using the replace references function. This indeed is nice, but not a real solution.

Best way in my opinion would be just selecting an material and get some options in the detail-outliner (i am aware materials in the content browser don't have this..) to exchange it using the regular drop-down menu or drag and drop to switch/test between different materials - Guess this is a question for UE4 developers / plugin programmers out here.

I am open for any idea to speed up this workflow (or tips how you're doing it!)

Best, Toby

Did you ever find a solution?

I use a very similar workflow and I'm also facing this problem. Selecting both materials (the original/placeholder and the new shader on UE) and using the "replace references" it's not good enough.

Does anyone have a solution?
