UE4 Editor Crash After Loading a Project

Hello,

I’ll define what the crash means. After loading a new or existing project, the editor will load up to 100%, close the loading screen, and appear at the task bar on the bottom normally, continuing to load in the background. Soon after however, it closes without warning and I get the default “UE4 has stopped working” and UE4 Crash Reporter.

It’s started recently when I used the 4.8 version, so I verified it but it was still crashing. I then uninstalled the 4.8 version and installed the 4.10 version instead. Same thing, and verifying doesn’t help. Even after installing the 4.9.2 version, it would continued to crash like the others.

After trying different things to get the Editor working, I decided to downgrade my integrated graphics driver to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and this solved my issue somewhat. The Editor finally loads, but since the driver was definitely not meant for this kind of video, the program is running at <1 frames per second. This shows that the issue I’m having is probably a driver issue.

UE4 did work when my OS was Windows 8.1, but the switch to Windows 10 might have messed things up horribly.

Hello UpsilonAlphaMu,

We have currently been monitoring a trend with users that have upgraded to Windows 10. The general consensus is that the amount of space required for windows 10 and UE4 is too much for previously minimum required systems. Developing on a laptop is not recommended as a given. Specifically due to limitations in graphics cards/ram/memory.

I will investigate this issue further and see if I can gather further information for you regarding this specific issue.

Thanks for replying, it’s nice to be able to communicate with staff directly about issues on this forum.

So, what I am seeing is about 6gb of ram and 750gb of storage for the laptop you are currently developing on. We recommend having at least 8bg of ram for development for the Unreal Engine. However, your spec’s are close which makes me think you may be running out of memory when trying to launch the editor.

Could you check to see how much memory you have on the C drive. If you have any room to clear up try that.

If that doesn’t work this could be an issue native to Windows 10.

So I just free up as much RAM as I can to see if the Editor won’t crash? I was confused on checking how much memory I have on the C drive, if that meant the space or the RAM.

RAM (pronounced ramm) is an acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers.

This involves how much you can run on your computer. For instance, running music and UE4 and what not at the same time.

On your C: drive that is called “Storage Space”

storage capacity - Computer Definition. The amount of data a storage device such as a disk or tape can hold. Storage capacity is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB).

So, if you go to your C: drive you should be able to see how much of that storage is actually taken up. You need around 30-50 gb free to run and develop with UE4.

After freeing up as much as I could, the Editor only got to around 520 MB of memory before closing and bringing up the Crash Reporter. It still had plenty of memory before it reached capacity.

Task Manager

Also with the storage space, I have 273 GB free so that shouldn’t be a problem as well.

You’re right. Maybe the switch from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 could have messed something up, since I was able to work with the Editor just fine on the same laptop when it had Windows 8.1 installed.

So an update after a week. After reverting back to Windows 8.1, reinstalling the launcher and engine, and changing my Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers to version 9.17.10.2932 of Dec/12/2012, the UE4 Editor finally works. It did not work with the latest drivers I had, version 10.18.10.4226 of May/25/2015, so I reverted back to the one I mentioned, and now things were running as they once were.

The engine of mine always freeze and then crash too. The strange thing is my cpu run only 40% and RAM occupied at half when it crash.

Hi -

Can you check your driver version number as mentioned by UpsilonAlphaMu in the Answer below? There have been known issues with Intel Integrated Graphics Cards and a specific range of drivers.

Thank You
