How do people make terrain textures?

I’m wondering how people make terrain textures. Are they taking real photos of the ground or is it a software?

Anyone know?

If you’re talking about the texture masks that separate for example sand and grass, many use world machine for that. If you mean getting the actual grass texture, they usually take pictures under generic light conditions and make those seamless.
