Marketplace engine version compatibility

Good suggestion to Epic:

Whenever you roll out a new major engine version, please make sure that the majority of the assets in your market place being updated to be compatible with that new major version. Otherwise, most people upgraded are left in a situation where most of the assets in the marketplace are not usable.

Also, I remember that there is a policy that assets in the marketplace should be required to be upgraded to the latest engine version within 10 days (or 45 days?), while after the rolling out of 4.10, it’s been more than 10 days, and even some of the Epic provided assets (such as InfinityBlade env and characters) are still only compatible with 4.9.2.

I understand that the UE4 is going free for development (which we greatly appreciate), but to build a healthy community that is as active as Unity, at least keeping the assets up to date would definitely help migrating more people from Unity.

I would even suggest that instead of forcing the original seller to keep the assets up to date, Epic Games might want to help make sure that the assets in the marketplace being up to date, so the original seller can focus on actually creating the great assets, without having to be exhausted by always having to rebuild/re-export/re-import stuff by themselves. It would definitely encourage them to put more stuff in your marketplace.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the great engine and setting it free!

Keep in mind you can download the engine version the asset is compatible with and then upgrade the project yourself to the newest engine version. It might just work right away depending on the asset.

Thanks Jay43k! You are right, it seems that the incompatibility as reported in the marketplace is largely misleading. Most of the assets reported not compatible with 4.10 are actually compatible after being downloaded. Took me a while to find out and build up my confidence level.

From my understanding, it is up to the developer of the marketplace asset / content to confirm that it works with the most recent version of the engine. Thus, even if it is not specifically marked compatible, it may still be. It’s often worth checking through the comments to see what other users have experienced. Furthermore, you could also ask in the forums.
