MAJOR BUG 4.10: Dynamic Lights are not rendering with Movie Capture

Hey,

After upgrading to Unreal 4.10, a level which we were rendering out using Create a Movie (in a matinee sequence), now none of our lights are turning on during movie capture - the scene is 100% dark.

In 4.9.2, everything was being lit correctly.

Our scene is mainly lit with dynamic lights, with some static lightning.

The scene plays fine when “played” (ie: Standalone Game), BUT we’re getting a complete black render when capturing.

Anyone know what the problem could be? The only thing we did was upgrade from 4.9.2 to 4.10

Hey cjames,

Could you show me how you have your Matinee set up? This includes the Matinee track and the Matinee actors details panel, as well as how you are calling the matinee to play.

Check to make sure the cameras are still there, just in case they could have vanished during the update process.

Thanks,

This is pretty serious - I’ve tried multiple different approached throughout the day, and it’s still pitch black.

Also, I can’t edit the title - but this is for all lighting (static, stationary, and dynamic).

Anyone? …

Hey Andrew,

Thank you for replying.

For NDA reasons I current cannot post certain images on a public forum, but will hopefully be on the UDN soon.

For the setup, I can explain it:

  • The cameras are all still there and functioning - I have 4, each a director track.
  • While scrubbing the timeline, ‘simulate’ , or Stand-Alone game, everything works as expected.

How I am triggering: In the Matinee, there is “Movie” button, which brings me to the Render Movie Setting. (note: this window has changed between 4.9.2 and 4.10, specifically with more options).

After changing the Frame Rate to 30, Resolution to 1920x1080 (16:9), Capture Type to PNG Image (verified that all capture types have the same issue) and all other options are at default, I click on the “Capture Movie” button.

Then a new windows opens with the scene to render, and everything is black (actually, except emissives, which is how I know that the camera are working properly).

But, to my original post, the only difference is that the engine has been upgraded from 4.9.2 to 4.10 - there has been no other submission in-between, with everything working as expected in 4.9.2.

To add: High-Resolution Screenshots work as expected.

Hey cignet,

So after some further investigating, I discovered this bug had been entered already UE-23651, and we plan on having it fixed in an upcoming major release.

Until that time, there is a decently easy workaround to fix this crash just by changing the Default Output Folder Directory.

Let me know if you are still having issues, or need additional assistance.

Cheers,

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for getting back to me, but this isn’t a crash of the editor, and changing the Default Output folder did nothing - the output is still rendering black (except for emmissives).

I am certain this is a different issue, specifically with Rendering with a Movie. And it’s one that cannot wait until 4.11, as it’s a broken feature and should be hot-fixed.

If you can private message me your email address, I’m going to check to see if I can send you some images directly to maybe help illustrate what it happening. I know this particular issue is difficult to manage without visuals.

Crap, I was logged in under my personal account.

This one is my work-account.

I unfortunately cannot provide you with my email, but you can still send me a private forum message which will remain private. The content you send is always treated with the utmost privacy and will never be shared with anyone outside of the company.

You can find me on the Forums at AndrewHurley

Let me know if you have other questions.

Cheers,

I have got the same issue, has there been any more news on this?

Edit: Actually I think my issue is slightly different. Just looking into it a bit more and will make a new topic if I still have problems.

Thanks

It seemed that most issues resolve din 10.2 for me. Take a look at the recent 11 preview build just in case.

Was this ever resolved? I’m having a similar issues. I’ve got a very simple scene comprised of a camera, a textured sphere, and a directional light. In matinee, I’ve included the camera in the director track and I’ve keyed the directional light to rotate at 90 degree increments each second for 4 seconds (to create a seamless reveal). I have set my key interpolation to linear to remove any easing. I’ve set blueprint to end the animation when matinee has finished.
I’ve also set matinee to play on level start.

When I play it in engine or scrub in matinee everything acts the way I need it to. When I try to output the movie all I get are black frames saved to the folder I have specified. Changing the folder location does nothing.

Please, send the cavalry.

Hey crompwell,

Since you have a relatively small test project where the issue occurs, to save time and the potential for error, would you mind sharing with me your project via a shareable link?

All you need to do is zip it into a folder and upload it to GoogleDrive or Dropboxx and share the link with me. Let me know if you have further questions or need additional assistance.

Cheers,
