[SOLVED] Where can I find a tutorial for setting up Source Control?

Hi Nemecys,

Have you gone through the steps in the documentation? If you still have further questions please let us know.

Thanks, TJ

Hi,

I have seen the other posts for setting up Source Control using Perforce or Subversion, so please forgive me for posting another question, but I have very little to no understanding with systems like this.

So I am curious as to whether anyone has made or knows of a good tutorial designed to setup Source Control using either of the two accepted type?

I had a go at it myself looking at other questions and forum posts but found that Setting up the actual server was extremely confusing as I have very little experience with SVN’s like this, So I would truly appreciate a step by step or something along those lines.

Thanks

Hey TJ,

Thanks for the link I struggled to find that on the Docs page, I have managed to set up some sort of server on my Local Machine, I think I did it wrong though, I’ll run you through my process ( I have never done any server setups before so this is entirely new to me )

  1. Download P4 Server and Client and
    Installed both.

  2. Set up my Server using Default
    Ports etc.

  3. Made a new UE4 Project.

  4. Pointed the Workspace to the same
    place.

  5. Made some random files to check
    P4V could see (
    http://puu.sh/8pBgK.png )

  6. Had to Close UE4 and Reopen then
it decided to actually connect to
the Source ( Otherwise it was just
    reading files created locally,
unaware of where they came from )

  7. Now the UE4 icons have appeared
    to show me, Check In/Check out/ (
    http://puu.sh/8pBpm.jpg )

  8. But When i try to Check In, I get
    this error ( http://puu.sh/8pBs9.png
    )

P.S. I pointed the P4Merge in " Settings > Loading & Saving " to the actual file in the program files too, not sure if that’s what I was supposed to do or not.

Hopefully I provided you enough information to make it apparent where I went wrong, but i believe my issue lies in setting up the initial server and finding a place to host it for my small 2 man team.

Any Advice?

Thanks

Hi,

not sure, what the focus of your question is.
In my starter-times with perforce, I found their video-tutorials quite helpful:

I am not using SVN, but heared the SVN-Book should be well suited for starters:
http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.7/svn-book.html

good luck, ricky

Nemecys, I’m having the same problem with that error you’re receiving on #8. This is my post about it: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/35101/perforce-checking-in-issue.html

I’m using Unreal Engine 4.1 however. Need help on this issue asap!!

Hey Rick,

Sorry it was quite a vague random message, but its because im very unsure about the entire process, I have had a look at your links but the terminology and tutorials are confusing and I am VERY unsure about which one would be relevant to setting up UE4

So any advice you guys can give me would be great, I hate asking to be spoon fed but this is a bit out of my league but highly powerful tool

Thanks

Hi Nemecys,

One of our developers answered on ‘ohmk’ post, I believe it has the info you’re looking for. Comment back here and let us know if it answers the issue you are having.

Thank you to everyone who commented,

With a bit of patience and a lucky guys on watching a video I have understood the very basics enough to set up a server,

If people would like I can make a short video tutorial on how to set up the Source Control on a Local PC?

ISSUE

  • I had no idea how to set up a server
  • No idea about terminology
  • Unsure what installers and files were required

FIX

  • Correctly Set up a server
  • Understood the difference between Depot and Workstation
  • Gave the installer careful attention will filling out server and client information
  • Using the P4V + P4Admin applications to gather information

That’s basically what I learnt anyway, Will make a video if people would like to see what I did, vote it up and let me know

Thanks again

Hey TJ,
It wasn’t but thanks, mine was an issue where I didn’t understand the difference between a Depot and Workspace

Thanks again

Did you ever make a video for this process?

I did not, but I can look into a quick one over the next couple of weeks, especially if no-one else in the community has managed to do one
