Textures are not loading on FBX files

Hello, I’ve seen similar questions posted on the forums regarding this problem, but none of the fixes seem to be working for me. So please forgive me if I ask redundant questions.

I have been creating some models for a video game that I’m working on using 3dsMax and Blender. I have been trying to use Material Instances that I found in the free Sci Fi Hallway package on the marketplace (thank you to whoever uploaded that by the way, the materials are awesome), but when I try to add them to my custom FBX files the textures won’t show up on the model. They will work on any imported props or actors that are made in UE4 but no matter what I do I cannot get them to load on the FBX files. I’ve tried adding textures inside of 3dsMax and Blender, but that only causes them to come out very distorted. I can post any screenshots or anything that might be necessary to fix the problem. Thank you for your time and again I’m sorry if someone has already answered this. I’ve seen similar questions, but none of the fixes helped.

Did you properly unwrap the uvs?

I thought I did, but when I build I keep having issues with overlapping UVs. I’m not really sure how to fix it. I’m pretty new to 3d modeling.

If you can, post pictures of the model in edit mode so I can see the seams, also post pics of the uv editor so I can see the uv shells. Lastly post pictures of the models in unreal. If you want upload the .blend file and send me the link. I’d be happy to look it over and give some pointers

Here’s the FBX file:

And this is the.max just in case:

My screenshot tool isn’t working properly right now and it’s 6:00 a.m. here. I can get them to you soon I just need to get some sleep before I lose my mind. I didn’t change anything in the .max file so the “work” I’ve done on the UV map shouldn’t have changed. Thank you so much for helping me. I have no idea what I’m doing xD.

I haven’t tried to unwrap my models from blender yet. I’ve only been using 3dsMax since I found out how to do it. Would it be okay if I sent you the FBX models for that?

Yes that would be fine. All models need uv coordinates to map the textures on a model. If the textures are distorted then uvs are messed up. There are some rules to follow when unwrapping a model to get a clean look. I’ll post pictures on what you can do in blender to see how your textures will map before you export the model with the files you send.

Cool. I’m about to look at em now.
ok so im looking at them now and a few things i can tell you for this type of object that will help is you can assign a specific material slot in your 3d program like blender, maya, max and unreal will pick that up. How that helps is when you uvunwrap your objects and have material slots assigned you can import the entire object to unreal and unreal will assign slots per material that you just drag and drop your materials on there and you are good to go.
Another thing is your uvs are not unwrapped very well. Easy to fix though. I cant give you direction on max, I dont use it but i will post some pictures here on steps to take in blender that you can follow.

Look through these pictures to figure out how to fix this mesh in blender and then you can apply that to the models you have yet to work on. The more you do the faster and easier it will get I promise. So a couple tips I may repeat here that I have in the pictures. So always try to model and uvunwrap in quads. You dont need to triangulate the model. Unreal does that for you. Its easier to work with quads. Also keep your uvs straight. when moving verts around in uv editor window press g to move and x or y to lock the axis you move in. you can select two vert and hit s,x,0 to align them vertically straight and s,y 0 to align them horizontally straight. you can select a whole string of verts and do this to quickly align and straighten out the uvs. If there are any other questions ask away.

One of these days ill have my training videos up that shows all this stuff. =) have fun and keep learning. This model is good, keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for helping! I’ve applied all of these steps and its coming along. I need to work on the texture sizing a bit but when its looking a lot better than it did. I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I should be able to apply this to the rest of my models pretty easily.
