Beta 6: Crash when launching editor or game with Oculus Rift plugged in

With beta 6, I am seeing a crash when I first launch the editor, only if I have the Oculus Rift headset plugged in.

I am also seeing a crash when I hit “Launch Standalone Game” from the editor only if I have the Oc Rift plugged in and connected.

Oddly, I can get around this by having the Oculus Rift NOT plugged in when I launch the editor or game, and then plug it in only after the game is launched. This works even if I set the monitor to the same resolution as it would be with the Oc Rift plugged in – so it can’t be a resolution issue.

That crash occurs when Windows reports that you have more than one primary monitor. Are you doing anything odd with desktop mirroring? Does the same issue happen if you extend your desktop onto the Oculus monitor?

Hi Nick – I don’t have a funky setup; I only have a single monitor besides the Oculus. I always use “duplicate these displays” since that seems to be necessary to get my Oculus to work properly, though I suppose I could try doing it the other way sometime this weekend and see what happens.

Hi Mothership,

Thank you for your report. I have had a tester with an Oculus attempt to reproduce the crash as you describe it, but he did not get these results. Could you please provide the log files for the crashes you have experienced? That would allow our developers to see the root of the crash. Also, could you provide what version of the Oculus you were using when this happened?

Thank you,

Alexander

Here’s the log of the Visual Studio log output when I launch; the last line seems to be related:

Ensure condition failed: !Info.bIsPrimary || PrimaryDevice == NULL

I have version 0.2.5c of the SDK installed, and the Oculus Configuration Utility says I’m using firmware version 0.18, which is the latest.

There is one last piece of information that I would like to know about the model. Are you using a standard or high definition Oculus?

I didn’t realize there was an HD one. Pretty sure this one is non-HD, but how do I check?

The easiest way to tell is the standard has a separate power box and the HD model plugs the headset in directly.

Well, it has a power adapter, but not a separate power “box.” Here’s a pic …
