Stuttering and other problems with new Radeon Crimson drivers

Hello, i’ve updated my drivers to the new Radeon Crimson and UE 4 started having a lot of stuttering as well as complete and partial freezes of the editor (only a part is being updated and the rest is frozen). I’ve attached a screenshot of the specs below.

Ack! I had the same card and I was so frustrated with it I purchased an nVidia 970… I tried everything… but, you are prolly smarter then me… Sorry, I couldn’t help.

Hi xlar8or,

This is an issue on AMD’s end, but we have an active Jira entry in our system, mainly to track our communication with AMD (UE-24826). We are trying to work with them to resolve the issue. It crops up mostly on Win10 machines, but we have seen instances of it with Win7 as well.

Thanks for the fast answer

OP: Can you use editor fine when using static lights?

I think so, the stuttering and screen freeze happens in random times i believe.

Any chance this bug might be connected?

I tried setting a project with static lightning only meshes and still happens, so i don’t think it’s related. This is also happening in 4.9.

Looks like EPIC is right so bug still is AMD driver fault, just installed Catalyst 15.7.1 and no shuttering.

Yeah, worse case we can rollback to previous drivers, but let’s hope AMD fixes this fast.

I believe we are seeing this same issue in Obliteracers on Steam. With v-sync on, at times the DX11 Present call will stall for ~1000ms when using certain newer AMD drivers.

The three workarounds we have presented to our community are under our troubleshooting guide in the section “I have an AMD card and the game stalls for long periods when v-sync is on.”

  • Play fullscreen (with v-sync on or off, can’t be windowed or windowed fullscreen).
  • If you need to play windowed, turn off v-sync.
  • Uninstall problematic drivers and then install 15.7.1.

I’ve also posted our issue in more detail to the AMD DevGurus forum here.

My development PC which can reproduce this issue is running on Win 8.1 64bit and has a HD 7870. I have tried the following drivers:

  • (No issue) AMD-Catalyst-14.4-64Bit-Win8.1-Win8-Win7-WHQL-Aug
  • (No issue) amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win8.1-64bit
  • (No issue) [Guru3D.com]-AMD-Catalyst-15.9.xBeta-64Bit.exe
  • (Has issue) amd-catalyst-15.11.1beta-64bit-win10-win8.1-win7-nov14.exe
  • (Has issue) radeon-crimson-15.11-win8.1-64bit
  • (Has issue) radeon-crimson-15.12-win8.1-64bit
  • (Has issue) non-whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.1.1-win10-win8.1-win7-feb3
  • (Has issue) whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.1.1-win10-win8.1-win7-feb12

Thanks for the pointers, i’ll try them out

I have been using UE4.10 for 1 day for a uni course. I have HD7870 with crimson drivers and also suffer from this freezing / stutter issue - almost exclusively when panning or moving the camera. Switching the viewport to unlit mode solves the issue instantly.

Cheers,

Anyone got solved or better with lastest drivers, for me much much less shuttering. R9 270

Hi ,

Have you tried any of the solutions listed on this page: Fix for AMD Driver Crash? [Solutions inside] - Rendering - Epic Developer Community Forums

-.

I’ve updated to the 16.3.2 (which has a fix for UE 4) and 16.4.1 and it’s still the same. AMD really screwed up the drivers this time, all the games work fine but my UE 4 is unusable (During PIE i have 1 FPS or less very frequently).
