UE4Editor.exe crashes with one-line callstack when opening a project

Hi everyone having some issues trying to get the editor to start. After first installing it I was able to use it and made a little map and all but was short lived when I went to open the editor later on and crashes just after the splash screen appears and shows the below crash report. My computer exceeds all the requirements for the editor I have tried to verify the install and Ive reinstalled direct X, Microsoft .Net Framework and my graphics drivers but still no luck any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Even though this had had no responses thought I would post anyway. Still have had no luck in getting 4.1 to work at all so I downloaded 4.0.2 and it works without any problem at all guess ill be using this as a quick fix until 4.1 gets a patch. So if anyone is getting the same problem as me just roll back to version 4.0.2 at least that way you can keep developing your project, if anyone comes up with a fix for 4.1 please post and share.

Having the same problem.
This was not an issue before installing VS 2013 Express. Not certain it’s related but that’s my best lead right now.

Hi Digital,

Did this happen as soon as you installed 4.1? Is it limited to one project or does this occur on a clean project with no additional content? Thank you!

No I installed 4.1 then i used it for about an hour or more then when I closed it and came back later it would give the above crash screen everytime on open any project or a clean start the editor just wont open at all, as I said before installing 4.0.2 works just fine and I did try to verify the install of 4.1 and when that didnt work I download a totally new fresh copy which also didnt work.

Maybe check your Engine/Content/Slate/Fonts/ to see if you have the Roboto-Black.ttf ? I am running UE4 4.01 and I do not have this font. Maybe it cannot find it, and crashes? Not sure if that could cause an issue like this though?

And if you do not have this font, just copy one of the others and rename it, thats what I would try first, because 80% of the log is about the font.

So I guess not many people have the same problem as me its been dead here for 3 days, if anyone can please help Ive still had no luck with finding a solution.

Thanks for posting I just tried what you said and it did crash again same code but the log file now is clear of all the font stuff just a few errors right at the top have a look and see what you think.

Why doesn't anything load when I click Launch? - Getting Started - Unreal Engine Forums Maybe this helps it has the same warnings

I would very much prefer not to install windows again if I can, thanks for the post anyway.

Hi Digital,

You said you had been working for a period of time on one project. Has this occurred when trying to open any other projects, for instance the sample projects or a new project with no additional content? Thank you and have a great day!

Hi yeah like I said earlier it doesn’t matter how I try and start the engine it will crash with the same error code every time.

Hi Digital Storm,

Sorry for the frustrations you are facing. This certainly seems like an unusual crash, since as you say it was fine at first and then became problematic later. That is definitely not “normal” behavior with a crash like this.

I know that you said your hardware exceeds the requirements, but would be willing to upload an attachment of your Dxdiag report? It may help to reveal something.

Also, are you launching the Editor through the Launcher, or are you using the source code from GitHub?

Thanks

Hi thanks for posting im launching the editor using the launcher was going to try the source code version but im not able to install visual which lead me to other problems which lead me to me doing memory tests which tell me my memory is faulty it explains a great deal of problems Ive been having so im following up with the faulty memory ive ordered more just need to wait for it to come into stock I will post back here if it fixes the problem or not, either way ill post to keep everyone filled in.

Hey, so I had the same problem (same log file, same crashes, same everything). I tried re-installing the entire engine launcher and all to no avail. I was about to re-install windows when I read my project’s log again. I found that I was getting errors similar to this thread. The fix suggested (deleting C:/ProgramData/Epic/Engine/DerivedDataCache/Boot.ddc) did nothing to improving my situation, but removing C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine\4.1\DerivedDataCache\Boot.ddc got my editor open again after 4 hours of frustration.

Hope this helps!

Similar behavior here (Terminating failed while unadvising the language notification sink from the TSF source), I know it started when I upgraded from 4.0.2 to 4.1.

Wrote the script below to wipe out everything the uninstaller left behind and the issue resolved:

  1. Uninstall the engine through the control panel

  2. Run the following in an administrator cmd.exe

:: NOTE: this should be whatever your install folder was
    rmdir /s "c:\Program Files\UnrealEngine"

    :: user folders
    rmdir /s C:\ProgramData\Epic\UnrealEngineLauncher
    rmdir /s %APPDATA%\..\Local\UnrealEngineLauncher
    rmdir /s %APPDATA%\..\Local\UnrealEngine

    :: regkeys
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\EpicGames\Unreal Engine"
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Epic Games\UnrealEngine"
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Unreal.Projectfile"
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EpicGames\Unreal Engine"

    • reinstall

Okay, thanks for letting us know.

I hope the new improved RAM fixes the issue for you.

Ok well I removed the faulty RAM stick and reinstalled windows and all its updates along with service pack 1. (Previously updates and service pack 1 wouldn’t install correctly or not at all due to the faulty RAM stick) Downloaded the launcher and editor and everything works fine now, so if anyone else is having weird issues with installing not just unreal but windows updates including visual download “memtest86+” and run it make sure it doesn’t detect any errors. Big thank you to everyone who gave suggestions and happy developing.

Glad this resolved the issue for you. Happy developing with UE4 to you as well!
