(How) Can I get UE4Editor to run on my machine (Gentoo, GT 640, FX 8350)?

Sorry about this. I know you guys don't officially support Gentoo, but I'm trying to get your engine up and running on my machine. I followed your wiki tutorial. Everything built properly. I cd into Engine/Binaries/Linux and run ./UE4Editor. The editor loads and all appears to be fine. But then, the moment I hit "Create project", the program crashes. I'll paste the log into this email and attach a video of it as it happens.

Certain details that may be of interest:

  • Graphics card is a NVidia GT 640 .. I'm pretty sure this is below the hardware requirements

  • Processor is AMD FX 8350

  • 8GB RAM

  • I have three monitors plugged into the GT 640 (probably overworked)

  • The NVidia driver is slightly out of date at version 340.93-r1 (don't want to update because the new one has bugs with my card)

Do you have the same error if you try using another version of the engine (4.11 preview instead of 4.10 for example)? Did you submit this crash when it occurred by clicking submit when the black box appeared after the crash? If so, can you provide your machine id to help search for the crash in our system?

Yes, it looks like the same issue is present on the 4.11 Preview 3 branch. The log was a bit different, but the behaviour is the same. I've included the stdout from the 4.11 run below.

No black box appears for me. A new window does appear, but it just copies what's behind it and then doesn't redraw anything. Take a look at the video I linked in the OP. It demonstrates what the window looks like and how it behaves.

If possible, could you run the editor under gdb and past the callstack from that? Additionally, can you try using Ubuntu LiveCD and let me know if you have the same issues? This should help identify if the hardware is the issue or something specific to Gentoo.

Trying it from a Ubuntu Live CD failed for a different reason. On the 4.10 branch, the generated makefiles exit with errors for some reason. I was in a bit of a hurry when I did this, so I hadn't time to figure out what specifically was the problem. Here's the log:

On the 4.11 branch, Setup.sh kept crashing. (Aborted: core dumped, or something like that). I'm sorry, I neglected to grab a log from the 4.11 crashes.

I'll mess around with gdb for a little while and get back to you shortly.

I noticed that the log for Ubuntu LiveCD mentions "refusing to run with the root privileges." Can you try running LiveCD when not running as root and let me know if you get the same result?

I have the same problem, also on Gentoo.

The "BadMatch" error seems familiar to me. I have a hunch that it has to do with us both not using a big DE like Gnome or KDE. I think I ran into this with other 3D software too, but can't recall how and if I managed to fix the problem before…

I'm running awesome, and I think it looks like you are, too @MakeItMacTonight?

I'll probably run the editor from XFCE to try and see whether my suspicion is right later today, but for now, I'm heading to bed. Will report back whenevs.

Random machine specs, so other people have a chance to maybe narrow down the problem:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3350P

Radeon HD6850 + binary Catalyst driver, version 15.9

6G DDR3 cheapo RAM

Kernel version 4.0.5

WM is awesome 3.6.5 (No big DE)

Engine versions tried: 4.10.0 (Release branch), 4.10.2 from tag

Can you provide any information about what you're seeing specifically? Which engine version are you using? Are you trying to install the engine with root privileges? If so, are you able to install the engine when not under root privileges?

What were you doing when the crash occurred? I can see in the output where you started the editor with ./UE4Editor - did the crash occur during the actual launch process or were you able to open the project? If you were in the project, what exactly where you working on (editing a blueprint, working on a material/particle effect, etc.)?

Sorry, forgot to mention that the crash occurred after I attempted to create new project (nothing actually were created except default Unreal Projects directory).

Okay, I just tested and it works fine for me when using XFCE4 instead of awesome.

We still need to find out whether this is a bug with UE4 or awesome, but for now you can get it to work by using some desktop environment instead of a bare window manager.

I'd suggest trying out whether problem also occurs with other bare wms as well. If nobody else tries, I'll probably report back in a few days with info on whether I could further narrow down the exact cause for this behavior…

Sure enough, I just tried it on i3 and it booted right up. Never would have guessed. So it looks like this either a problem with Awesome or a problem with the way UE interacts with Awesome.
