How do I create Overcast Interior Lighting?

Hi,

So, we’ve all seen beautiful sunny levels in UE4. But here’s something I’m trying to figure out for a week now - how to do an overcast day interior (!) lighting. The classic approach would be - skylight, and some sort of area lights in window frames to push light inside. BUT, here’s the thing - we do not have anything that can work as an area light in UE 4. All we have is point light and spotlight, which just look wrong if used for that purpose.

Please share how would you approach such lighting such scene. Thank you.

You could try using a directional light with a high indirect contribution.

Thanks! This seems to be almost working, in conjunction with shadow casting skylight. One thing is still that you can see sharp shadows from DirectLight, even with very low multiplier. Is there any way to soften those? LightSourceAngle doesn’t seem to be doing anything.

You should be able to flag your directional to cast indirect shadows only, if I recall correctly.

Hmm, that would be a great option, but I can’t seem to find it. Only Cast shadow option is available. Any idea where is the one you mentioned? And thanks again, at least I’m getting close to what I wanted to achieve.

Ah you’re right, I must’ve mixed it up with something else.

The only other thing I can think of is disabling dynamic shadows on that light, so that your directional is only casting indirect/static shadows.

Yeah, that’s what I did. Basically bake lightmass with Direct on and strong indirect contribution and a very neutral color, and after it bakes, just shut it off completely. Result - I have enough bounce light, but it doesn’t seem like it’s sunny outside, rather that the sun is diffusing through clouds. Would be awesome to do that without turning off the light though
