best programs for world generation?

Hello, I am just getting into unreal engine 4 again where as my last computer could not really run it that well. And I was just wondering what the best programs for making maps and terrain would be that are compatible with unreal engine 4.

While asking this I suppose I should ask as a generalization, what are some of the best programs to pair with unreal engine?

There is a wide variety of programs suitable for unreal. Just depends on how much time you can take to learn. For instance “world machine” can create some very nice terrains maps but its a pain to get into unreal. Unreal has worked on some very nice terrain editing tools worth looking into.
As for other third party software. Xnormal, crazybump for making normal/heightmaps.
Quixel suite or Allegorithmic substance for making materials, substance has a ue4 plugin that is easy to use.
3ds max, Maya, blender for 3d modeling, uv unwrapping and rigging.
Photoshop or gimp for 2d image editing.
Zbrush for highpoly sculpting.
The are other various little programs but these mentioned are used by most and you will find many tutorials on YouTube to help you through each plus here on the answer hub is many people knowledgeable in integrating these programs into a workflow for unreal.

Bringing WorldMachine maps to Unreal is quite easy actually. Learning how to use it to make good landscapes can take some time though, and you need a good system to generate large landscapes.

I might go back if that’s true. I recall some issues couple years past?

Yeah, World Machine heightmaps work just fine as long as you pick the correct format to export(I don’t recall what it was but i can find out if you need.)

Oh that’s OK my friend. I can’t for the life of remember the trouble I had and from what I read at the time there was a long process and I was not that desperate to make it work so I left it alone. None of the projects I’ve worked on required it. Someday though I have a future project in mind I may go that way.
