Static mesh not appearing as physical object, light passes through?

v4.10.3

so i’m following this tutorial, and the fella has provided his assets, and I am unable to replicate what hes doing. Using the exact same static mesh, which is the window frame with a base, light passes right through it as if it wasn’t even there. But for him it does not. I have tried casting shadow, i have tried couple other things, but no luck. Doesn’t look like he provided a blueprint though but he never mentions it, however whenever we needed to go into the blueprint he always has showed that part in the same tutorial.

The tutorial was made during version 4.1 i believe.

Here’s a pic comparison (my atmospheric fog is off in this picture),

Mine would be top, tutorial bottom.

I am at a total loss, I have been at this for 3 hours now, so if anyone has any suggestions I’d really appreciate it.

Can you use a light blocking volume? If you provide the link to tutorial I’ll look it over. Also a lot has happened in the light rendering engine between 4.1 and 4.10. There is going to be a lot of differences when following an out of date tutorial. Part of the fun is overcoming the challenges to learn how to make the engine work for you.

hi! thanks for the response, I’ve tried creating a Blocking Volume from the static mesh itself, but I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing, I’ve played around with the options in it but no luck unfortunately.

Also the tutorial is only accessible if you have an account with Digital Tutors. And since its really old I can’t seem to find anyone around to help with it lol

I have digital tutors. Whats the title? Also there is a specific light blocking volume you can use. I am not talking about settings in the mesh details.

its video number 17 when he starts placing the window frames. then a video or two later he does the lighting.

I have tried creating a Blocking Volume from the Volumes tab under BSP, tried to follow the documentation for it but I didn’t really understand it.

So, i cheated a little and placed a really thin rectangle box inbetween the frame to block the light lol to give the proper shadow effect lol

Lol. Whatever works. I’ve done stuff like that. I’ll watch the video tonight to see what I can come up with. Digital tutors is a good place start but I have found their unreal tutorials to be not only out dated but do not show a good clean workflow. But their sculpting tutorials for zbrush are excellent

haha i agree. and actually i was curious about zBrush good to know their tutorials are excellent. Was going to eventually get into Maya and Zbrush. Put my foot in my mouth when i made a promise to someone about making them a character -__- now i gotta dive in and figure out how.

Thank you for the help EyeDee10Tee

My workflow is blender, blender sculpt or zbrush and xnormal, or substance because substance can bake the highpoly detail to low poly mesh and then I just jump into building my texture maps. I like blender because it’s pretty straight-forward. Also cgcookie. is only $23/mo and gives training on blender, sculpting, photoshop. They’ve been around a few years. Sadly they have no unreal training to date. There are at least 3 different styles of character modeling courses that are really good. I’ve been a member for 4 years and I highly recommend it. I think there is a 30-day free trial. Just food for thought.

23 a month is way more affordable than going to college for it lol so i appreciate it. i’ll definitely look into it. I lucked out with Digital Tutors because my company paid for Pluralsight for the staff and it gave me access to Digital Tutors lolol I will try Blender, i think i still have it installed from Steam. I’m just looking for something that isn’t going to drive me crazy so if Blender is pretty straight forward I’m happy with that and will dive right into it.

If you need any help with blender send your questions to @gmail. I would be happy to lend a hand. Currently I am building a tutorial series using a blender to unreal pipeline. I have tried to be a blender champion because I believe in it. Its taken a lot flak from professional 3d artists over the years who use maya. While I have nothing against an industry standard like Maya, I use it myself. Blender is much more enjoyable to use, less frustrating. I too got my hands on digital tutors because of association with a game studio, its recently folded under and I just found out today they cancelled their account. I cant log on to view the tutorial LOL. Anyways again im happy to help. Feel free to email me if you need help. Best wishes my friend.

awesome! thank you man, i really appreciate that.
