How can I soften the shadows on my landscape actor?

Below I have attached a photo with two segments. The right shows the shadows before the lighting is built. After I build the lighting, the shadows become much too sharp and incorrect. I am doing an underwater scene right now and I was wondering if someone could help me achieve softer shadows for more realism?

Any luck here? I’m trying to sort out this exact problem, myself.

Nope… sorry man, I’m still waiting for someone to answer on here.

Hi Anaklosmos,

Try increasing the Static Lighting Resolution of your landscape to get better results. The default value is set to 1.0. Try incrementally increasing it until you get the results you like.

You can also try adjusting the Light Source Angle to a higher value under the lightmass category.

Here are the results:

Also make sure you’re using lightmass importance volumes around your playable areas, and when you build lighting set the lighting quality to Production for the best results.

I hope this helps,

Tim
