Fans and PSU get very loud when running editor

Running the editor makes my machine make this noise like an old hdd spinning extremely fast, except (as far as I can tell) it’s coming from my PSU. This happens anytime I have any real-time graphics on screen - which means any kind of viewport and so forth. Switching to another program, or simply opening a menu in unreal (only while it is open, mind) makes the issue instantly stop. It returns as soon as I make the viewport active again. I have a beefy machine, recently upgraded, and regularly run other very hardware-intensive programs and games in 4k, without any of them causing this noise. I’ve seen several other posts complaining of similar, but not quite the same, problem. I have turned off real-time thumbnails as per recommendations in those posts, but to no great effect. Can anything be done?

Hi Bluntie,

  • Can you post your dxdiag here so I can take a look?
  • What are you typically doing when this occurs?
  • Do you see this occurring more often during shader compilation?

Hi Bluntie,
