Vive Build results in black screen

Hi all,

whenever I package my project or launch it from the editor and try to run the executable the screen stays black and the game freezes when my HTC Vive (both, DK1 and DK2) are connected. When I unplug it from the PC the build works fine, there is no difference in SteamVR running or not. THis problem drives me crazy, especially since output log doesn’t seem to show any errors :confused:
When running it as a VR Preview from the editor everything works fine, the problem only occures for the build.
I also created a total empty level but same issues there too.
Any help appreciated.

We have tested this issue by packaging a project and attempting to run it on the Vive that we have, and have not been able to reproduce the black screen issue you are seeing.

Is this occurring in a clean project as well? If not, could you please zip up the project that you are seeing a black screen in and PM me a link to Dropbox where I can download it so we can test it on our end?

I got the same Problem:

I have set everything up. Got my VR_Character and Game Mode.
Set everything correctly.

Got Instanced Stereo on and the execute console command “Stereo on” in my Game Mode on Event Begin Play.
I have nothing in my Scene, but my Character and a Cube to walk on.

I pack it and when executing the Exe, I just see a black Screen, but my BOunds grid is still showing.

Can soneone please help me?

Hi have the same issue!

If I open the steamVR mirror I can see at the right edge a small part of the unreal scene.
But the rest looks like there is a black plane in front of the camera.
very weird.

I think it has to do something with the new steamVR drivers, multimonitor, windowed / fullscreen mode of unreal.
I tried to start the project in -windowed mode via command line flag on the build exe file. I can then see the scene normally but the vive hmd is not starting up.

sorry for the very late reply.
I was able to fix the issue on our site - turns out some config file was corrupt ( an empty line to much as it looked like ) and that somehow caused the whole issue…
Might have happened in Unreal, might have happened by using git
Anyway - if you experience strange issues look into your config files

If the Rift is not working in a Packaged game, make sure that Start in VR is checked. Start In VR can be found by going to Project Settings > Description > Settings.
