UE4 Freezes when importing

Hello
So recently I have been trying to start using UE4 and I’ve come to a bit of a halt as the engine keeps freezing. I have Windows 10 on my computer and I have read on the forums online that this is an issue that some other people have been having as well. I don’t really know what to do. I’ve been thinking about uninstalling the program and reinstalling it to see if that has any effect on it. I will post pictures below. If there is any information you could give me on this problem that would be greatly appreciated. After I click the Open button to export it sits there on 75% and loads forever. I have let it sit there for a good 10 minutes before I force quit the program because it stops responding all together.

Hello Glaciation,

The easiest way for me to test this issue would be for you to share with me with files you are having troubles with so I can test them on my end.

I am noticing in your screenshot (probably not the cause of the issue) but your .fbx extensions are different. One is capitalized and the other is not. What modeling program did you use to create these meshes, and what .fbx version are you using (i.e. 2014, 2015 or 2016)?

Thanks,

I just noticed the capitalization problem as well. As for the meshes themselves I got them from the EPIC Games launcher. I am fairly new to this kind of stuff and I noticed the tutorials on the launcher and started following the one that led me to those meshes, but when I try to import them as I’ve shown up above… the Engine freezes at 75%

Could you tell me which assets you are using, or provide me with the files in a zipped folder attached to your response?

I tried to upload a zip, but when I tried, it said that it was an improper file. Could you please explain to me how to find out which asset I am using. I am sorry for the confusion but like I said before I am fairly new to all of this. Unless by telling you which asset you simply mean the name of the FBX I am trying to use.

How about this. You provide me with the steps you took to get to the point in which you experienced the hang time, and we can go from there.

I basically need you to tell me what models you exported and from which project. I will say I have seen this issue before, and it is usually an issue with the users computer/hardware.

Although the editor seems to freeze at 75%, the engine is still running processes and is still calculating your models for import. You can see this happening if you were to try importing the models again and waited for it to freeze. Then press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and click on the processes tab. You should see the engine running processes still.

Thank you,

Ok well I suppose I’ll just start from the beginning.

  1. On the Epic Games launcher under the Learn tab I clicked on Artist Quick Start and preceded to follow the instructions on that page.

  2. If you scroll down on the first page that comes up you should see an area that says steps.

  3. Under steps there should be a tab that says Creating Folders on the Creating Folders page there should be something that says “Before you get started: Download Quick Start Assets from the following link”

  4. https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/attachments/Engine/Content/QuickStart/1/2/QuickStartSampleAssets.zip This is the link.

  5. I proceeded from there onto the unreal engine, created a new folder and then tried to import the two .fbx files which lead to the supposed freeze.

Hey I just tested these assets on my end and had no problem importing them into a new project using 4.10.4.

Could you provide me with your dxdiag so I can take a look at your systems specifications?

Here it is

I have a couple of suggestions for you to try in order to resolve the issue.

  1. Check to make sure your drivers for your Nvidia 960M card are up to date.
  2. Open the exported files in 3ds Max or Maya (or another 3d modeling program) and re-export them as a .FBX 2014 file version.
  3. While you are importing and if it still hangs, open up your processes in windows (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to make sure the editor and shader compile worker are not running processes.

Let me know if you have further questions or need additional assistance.

Cheers,
