Very bad performance

Hey i’ve updated to 4.11 recently and i’ve noticed that i’ve started getting huge frame gaps in PIE, 5 or 10 seconds long before it shows the next frame. I was experiencing bad performance with the new AMD drivers in 4.10 so i reverted to last working drivers and it was fine, but since i’ve updated to 4.11 it got even worse. I updated the drivers again but it’s still the same. Some times it’s so bad it’s completely unplayable.

Hi ,

Does this occur with a new project or one you started in UE4.10 (or both). Also, please post a copy of your DXdiag.

Thanks,

.

I also get long pauses every once-in-awhile as well in 4.11.1 in PIE on OS X. I just figured it was UE’s garbage collection that must run slower from the editor. I got the pauses under 4.10.x as well, though probably not as long. When I package my project it doesn’t seem to have the problem. My project was started under 4.10.x.

This happens on both a Mac Pro (late 2013) with a AMD Firepro D700 and on a Macbook Pro (early 2013) with an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M.

I did not have this problem in 4.10.4 only when i upgraded. I will post my dxdiag as soon as im near my pc.
I can test making a new project to see if that happens.

Thanks for the response. To clarify, I mean does this occur in a project you started in UE4.10 and then opened a copy of in UE4.11? Or does this occur in any project in UE4.11, including blank projects that have been newly created in UE4.11?

I’ve tried with 2 projects i’m working on that came from 4.10.4 and they have that issue. When i created a third person template from scratch in 4.11 it seems fine, although it’s a simple project. I’ve attached the dxdiag

We are looking into this, however, in the meantime we need the following information:

  • Do the projects perform as expected when you open them UE4.10.4? (or now that you have updated your drivers, do the new drivers cause performance issues in UE4.10.4 as they had previously?)
  • Does this occur with more complex projects, like the Content Examples? (If you do not have this, please download, install and run temporarily to determine if this only occurs when a UE4.10 project is updated to UE4.11)

In 4.10.4 they were running great with the old drivers. Only after noticing that the performance in 4.11 was bad did i update the drivers, i thought that would help that but i guess i was wrong. Content Examples seems to be fine too.

Thanks for supplying the above information. -So we know that:

  1. Updating to latest AMD drivers caused bad performance in UE4.10 projects
  2. Reverting to earlier AMD drivers corrected performance in UE4.10 projects
  3. Updating Projects to UE 4.11 results in bad performance (with earlier AMD drivers installed)
  4. Updating to latest AMD drivers does not improve performance of projects that originated in UE4.10 and have been converted to UE4.11
  5. Projects that originate in UE4.11 perform as expected with latest AMD drivers

However, what is unknown on our end is:

  1. Do the original UE4.10 projects still exist from when you made a copy in UE4.11 (or did you overwrite the originals?)
  2. If so, do the original UE4.10 projects still exhibit poor performance in UE4.10 now that the AMD drivers are updated?

Please respond with this information. -Thanks again!

Unfortunantely i’ve overwritten the original projects since i no longer have 4.10.4 installed.

No problem… Could you open a 4.10 copy of “Vehicle Game” from the Learn tab in the Launcher and then convert that to UE4.11 and see if you experience the same frame rate drop? This is the game I’ve requested tested on a machine similar to yours.

I can probably do that with the precompiled version, since i don’t have enough disk space for 2 github installations, but i’m not sure if the results will be the same.

Have you had a chance to test this yet? If not, disregard testing with the Vehicle Game and try testing with “Couch Knights,” if possible. Also, you could create a new blank project in UE4.11 and migrate assets from one of your older/converted games and see if the frame-rate drop persists.

It’s gonna be hard for me to test things from 4.10 now, i’m really low on disk space. My main project seems to be better, but the second game i’m working is still pretty bad and that was also 4.10.4 project updated to 4.11. I can try the blank project and i’ll let you know

Hi ,

It appears that there is something asset-specific that is causing the framerate issues you are reporting when you update a project from UE4.10 to UE4.11 as opposed to occurring in projects started in UE4.11.

For now, we are marking this issue “resolved” for tracking purposes. However, if you experience framerate drops in projects newly created in UE4.11, please post your findings on this thread.

Lastly, we typically suggest finishing the projects in the same version of the Engine they are started from and only updating if there is something added that is critical to your finished project. If you do need to update, always open a copy of the project in the newer version in order to isolate issues caused by updating more easily.

Thanks,

.
