Search help

  • Simple searches use one or more words. Separate the words with spaces (cat dog) to search cat,dog or both. Separate the words with plus signs (cat +dog) to search for items that may contain cat but must contain dog.
  • You can further refine your search on the search results page, where you can search by keywords, author, topic. These can be combined with each other. Examples
    • cat dog --matches anything with cat,dog or both
    • cat +dog --searches for cat +dog where dog is a mandatory term
    • cat -dog -- searches for cat excluding any result containing dog
    • [cats] —will restrict your search to results with topic named "cats"
    • [cats] [dogs] —will restrict your search to results with both topics, "cats", and "dogs"

Just Simple masked materials can cause crash. for example, a const scalar link to opacity mask can make this . and if I turn off vr mainfest or disable masked materials ,it won't crash. ES2 Preview looks all good.

Interestingly my S7 Edge does not crash with this material.

My device is a Exynos: SM-G935F, 6.0.1, Oculus System Activities version: 1.0.2.4 So it looks like it's a snapdragon only problem!

It is noticed by these users with my released app on the Oculus store :(

avatar image Chris Babcock STAFF May 05 '16 at 11:17 PM

I tried a non-GearVR project with masked material above on a SM-G935A and it worked fine. I haven't been able to try GearVR; the install of the Gear VR services keeps failing.

avatar image aussieburger May 06 '16 at 07:36 AM

Hi Chris thanks for looking into it,

It only occurs on the GearVR.

If you have trouble updating your gearvr (it doesn't run at all?!?) then you probably need to enable the pre-installed facebook service on your device. Commonly known issue with the solution here:

https://forums.oculus.com/community/discussion/32183/oculus-system-activities-not-updating#latest

  • go into app manager show all (systems) apps show disabled reactivate facebook apps option: reactivate samsung VR apps if they were disabled also (not my case) go to oculus (and than to "oculus home") delete data and cache (don't need to ununstall) start oculus app - enter your account ID (was deleted with data cleanup) start update - now it shall work! :)

avatar image Chris Babcock STAFF May 06 '16 at 06:19 PM

Unfortunately that doesn't work for me on the edge. I don't even have the Oculus app. It tries to download 128.6MB (Gear VR Service, Gear VR System, Gear VR Video, Gear VR Gallery, App Manager, Oculus, Oculus Home), gets to the end and says "Install error" with just an option to install again which does the same all over :(

I also don't see any apk's downloaded to the sdcard to try grabbing and manually installing as suggested on one of the S6 install failure topics.

avatar image aussieburger May 06 '16 at 06:59 PM

Strange... Do you have access to a non Edge S7 with gear vr software installed? Not 100% sure, but I think it maybe reproducible on a normal S7 with snapdragon

avatar image Chris Babcock STAFF May 06 '16 at 08:30 PM

I just tried a SM-G930V (Snapdragon) with the same failure to install. I'll see if I can find another one.

avatar image BhaaL May 07 '16 at 10:02 AM

On my Exynos, I ran into similar issues because I disabled Facebook stuff (which I don't use, nor want to use). If you go to the Application Manager, switch to System Applications (on the "More" Menu) and scroll down to com.facebook.appmanager/com.facebook.system - are any of those disabled? They need to be on for GearVR to work properly. There is a 3rd app called Facebook, which can be safely disabled.

I just read this https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/4i4f2n/an_honest_apology_from_the_developer_of_annie/ and I am also interested in seeing this issue fixed or relayed to Samsung/Qualcomm and getting them to fix their drivers (most likely related to Snapdragon SoC only).

Thanks

avatar image motorsep May 06 '16 at 11:46 PM

Maybe you need to update OS?

I recall phone has to be online first time you put in in Gear VR (whether it has to be 4G or if WiFi is enough, I don't know)

avatar image liumingod May 09 '16 at 03:42 AM

Thanks for reply. This give me a clue to find the reason. The Chinese edition S7 os maybe not update now, beacause I update nothing..

I confirm the issue still exist in Engine 12.11, here is what my situation, my device info is

AT&T S7 - SM-G930A (Snapdragon variant) Android Version: 6.0.1, Kernel : 3.18.20-7617530 VR Service Version: 2.5.38/253801000 VR Framework Version: 9

There is the latest update for the AT&T S7 as today.

As what I show my crash log in this post, I found out that the masked material is the reason which cause a signal 11 crash, for example, a default material in the engine

UE412\Engine\Content\EngineMaterials\DefaultTextMaterialOpaque.uasset

which is an example used masked material, and using it will cause a signal 11 crash. By modifying the material into this alt text basically delete the link to Opacity Mask and change the Blend mode not use "Masked" fix the crash.

Again, the signal 11 crash only happen in VR mode on Snapdragon Variant of S7. My SM-G930FD (Exynos variant) do not have any problem with the same setup.

My SM-G930FD system info is Android Version: 6.0.1, Kernel : 3.18.14-8888212 VR Service Version: 2.4.29/242900000 VR Framework Version: 11

I hope that this info helps!

Hi liumingod,

I got an S7 SM-G930V (Snapdragon) retail phone to try your masked texture test on. I added a cube to the scene with your material (unlit, masked, red, opacity at zero). It works fine for me. Here are the versions of the services I'm running:

Gear VR System 1.0.10 Oculus Home 1.16.3 Oculus System Activities 1.0.2.5-28872257

I tested this with 4.11.2.

Can you provide the build number from Settings -> Device information -> Build Version?

Hopefully liumingod can answer soon but maybe it really is a S7 Edge problem only - did you manage to get your S7 Edge working yet?

avatar image liumingod May 11 '16 at 07:23 AM

OK, I think maybe is a S7 edge snapdragon problem. My Versions Gear VR System 1.0.10 Oculus Home 1.14.1 Oculus System Activities 1.0.2.4-26822117

avatar image aussieburger May 11 '16 at 07:40 AM

Oculus Home 1.14.1

that seems like an older version - what if you remove it and reinstall do you get a newer version? does the newer version fix the problem?

avatar image Chris Babcock STAFF May 11 '16 at 08:36 PM

I need the actual build number, that determines the GPU driver installed. This is in Settings.

avatar image liumingod May 16 '16 at 09:20 AM

Build number : MMB29M.G9350ZCU2APD1 Is this?

avatar image econty Jul 06 '16 at 10:56 PM

I was able to reproduce the crash using a masked material on a S7 Edge Snapdragon. The level would render for a fraction of a second, then the crash, which leads me to think it's a problem that happens over a number of frames, not immediately upon rendering the material.

Build Number is MMB29M.G935VVRU2APD2

If one of these conditions wasn't true, the game did not crash:

1) Game is running on the S7 Snapdragon. The S6 exhibited no crash.

2) Material uses the Masked blend mode. Switching to Translucent blend mode and using the Opacity pin prevented the crash.

3) Opacity Mask is connected to an input. Material could be on Masked blend mode, but if the Opacity Mask was left unconnected, there wasn't a crash.

4) Game is running in VR mode. Running in non-VR mode prevented the crash.

avatar image yan3 Jun 24 '16 at 02:22 AM

I was troubled with the same problem, too, but worked without crashing if I deleted the mask material as you said. Thank you for giving information. In addition, my galaxy is S7 Edge snapdragon(SC-02H), too.

avatar image motorsep Jun 24 '16 at 02:25 AM

So, still no solution for masked materials on S7 with Snapdragon ?

avatar image JeremiahBeardly Jun 28 '16 at 05:34 PM

Do you see a message like this one in LogCat?: W/Adreno-GSL(32053): : ioctl fd 34 code 0xc040094a (IOCTL_KGSL_GPU_COMMAND) failed: errno 35 Resource deadlock would occur

We are seeing this crash the S7 Edge with the Qualcomm Adreno (Snapdragon) hardware, but not on the regular S7. The edge is a hardware revision later (Rev0.7 for Edge vs Rev0.6 non-edge).

avatar image econty Jul 06 '16 at 10:17 PM

Far as I can tell, the IOCTL messages are a symptom, not the cause, as the various services fail when the application crashes. I saw that message, too, but the issue turned out to be an Opacity Mask as the original poster points out.

avatar image motorsep Jul 06 '16 at 10:24 PM

The issue is not the Opacity Mask. It simply materializes the issue. It's either driver, or something else. In either case, it would be nice for Epic to pin point it, and hopefully report it to Oculus/Samsung/Qualcomm to be fixed (or provide some sort of workaround so that people could still use Masked materials in their projects for Snapdragon-based S7)

Hi there,

Any news concerning this crash? We are also dev for Gear VR and our next title will be released this month. But just discover that it crash on GearVR just on some S7 (with snapdragon) (works fine on others S7).

Thanks Ronan
