The editor renders blocky lighting artifacts on object edges

We are regularly experiencing blocky lighting artifacts such as the one visible here:

5833-artifacts.gif

Testing indicated the following characteristics:

  • Happened with the 4.0 and 4.1 branches.
  • Happens the same on a number of different hardware/driver configurations.
  • Artifacts tend to occur at the edges of geometry.
  • Artifacts are always screen-space aligned rectangles.
  • Artifacts are camera location dependent. (the flickering seems to be caused by the subtle camera movements of TXAA)
  • Artifacts seem to be related to shadowing, for example in the case of this gif, turning off the main sunlight. removes the artifacts. (Note that this is an indoor area that should not get any sunlight)
  • Artifacts have also been spotted in some of the example content, however seem to be less frequent/obvious there, probably due to differences in lighting setup.
  • Artifacts occur on both static meshes as well as BSP surfaces.
  • Artifacts also occur in SceneCaptures.

These issues are quite distracting so a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ,

Does this happen in a clean project with no additional content as well or is it limited to one project? Could you post your dxdiag as well? Thank you and have a great day!

Thank you for the quick reply, here is the [dxdiag][1] of the system I took these screenshots on. However, as stated before it also occurs on other systems I’ve tested on.

It is not limited to one project, for example here they are visible in an unedited blueprint example project:

Hi ,

I was able to reproduce this and attached this link and my findings to a bug report to be assessed. Thank you and have a great day!
