UE4 LeapMotion+DK2, Character Movement

So, i tried playing around with unreal engine and leap motion. using a video tutorial i got the leap motion basic character to work, i can stand around, look around and move my hands.
however, i cannot get my character to move, no matter what i try.
i tried messing around with different blueprints, trying to create my own, but i just kept getting errors.
the problem seems to be that the character gets built after you run it instead of the character already being there as an usable pawn, so i can not use any standard movement function.

btw, for testing purposes i just wanted to move forward whenever i “grab” with my left hand.
the grabbing gets recognized, but i can’t get my character to move.
