GPL and other incompatible licenses

Hi, Im wondering about this for a while, in the EULA it is stated, I can’t use some content under gpl and other licenses, but does that mean only the code, or i cant even use assets like: meshes and textures under those licenses. I don’t really get it form EULA.

thx in adv.

I think you’re asking whether you can combine GPL or other viral-licensed non-code content, like art assets, in a game which uses UE4. In my opinion, that would be in breach of the UE4 EULA. GPL is designed to virally cover a final combined project where one or more elements are GPL licensed.

As I get it, it states that I can’t use licenses, which requires the license of the technology, and content provided by epic, to be modifyed by the other license. I can see why GPL is problematic in code, or statically linking, becase it requires the code to be shared. For an asset, as i see, it requires only the asset itself to be shared under same license, so is that still considered as a breach?

It sounds like you’re saying that in your view of the GPL terms, you believe that it treats code differently from art assets?

I don’t view it that way. In my reading it just refers to whatever is covered under the license and does not differentiate between code or art. It treats both equally.

yeah i was a bit confused, thats why i tought it would be better to ask it, so if iI use just a texture under these licenses that means i have to share everything under the same license eg what i myself made: code, meshes, sounds, everything?

and what about sites like textures.com? can i use their licensed products? they have their license to their textures, and as I read, I don’t have to license the other content under that license just the texture i use.
Textures for 3D, graphic design and Photoshop!

I don’t view textures.com license as incompatible with the EULA.

thank you very much for clearing up, there are lots of sites im unsure about, do you know where can i ask them all about? is there a specific forum thread or something?

eg this site: http://archibaseplanet.com/ it says it has over 70k+ 3d high quality models etc, but i see no terms of use or license, its a bit too good to be true.

I can’t review every site’s licensing terms with you, but generally look for the licensing terms and see whether they allow use in game and whether they require that the whole game be covered by specific terms (this unusual for art assets).

For that link, I didn’t see any terms which suggests they’re not really free to use.
