How to go about making a MOBA mini-map

I am looking for anything to point me in the right way when making a minimap system in a MOBA game, I’m not looking to making it react to inputs, rather making a view from top down where I have faces / or symbols representing where the character is moving. I’ve already got a scene capture image working on the UI, however it’s very far away from the players and it is really hard to understand the characters from that far away. Something like a league of legends mini-map.
