Memory Usage Increases Steadily

Hello!

There has been something bothering me since the time I worked on Unreal. Whenever I do something, anything, the ram usage (shown at top right corner) increases steadily, slowly, and rather sneakily.

I do not have any massive outrage of ram usage as some people are witnessing, though what I see is a rather steady increase that happens whenever I continue on working regardless of it being the same blueprint or not.

I start to work with around 1.5k GB usage, which is well acceptable for me. Please note that my current project is around 200 MB. The more I work on it though, the amount increases and if I dont restart the editor, it gets to a 10k GB in at least 7 hours of non-stop working.

What started to bother me is that, well, it was always like this. I was wondering if this is a known issue that is going around for long, that the engine is not releasing the memory. I am also abit scared if this is also happening in a packaged game but my high assumption is the garbage collector preventing this to happening as I heard.

Anyway, I can share my project if it is needed to a staff no problem. I just want to know if it is a problem on my end or not.

Thank you for your time and reading!

Hi Achilleon,

Can you send a link to your project in a private message to me on our Forum? I’d like to see if I can reproduce the issue here.

Thanks,

Just sent you the private message Mr .

Hi Achilleon,

Thanks for sending me your project for testing. I ran a test between 10am and 12pm on my system while running other programs, even other versions of the editor simultaneously and, while I did see a slight increase of 2,134.44mb to 2,164.07mb initially, memory usage leveled off at 2,172.36mb and did not change for over an hour.

I also tried this with blueprint windows docked and floating, making minor changes. Again, ultimately this did not change memory usage significantly.

Please send a copy of your Dxdiag and I will try to have this tested on a machine that closely matches your system specs.

Thanks,

Thank you for the information Mr . I also do not get any memory increase when I edit things in blueprints, or making the editor stay open for hours.

However as I said on my private message, this happens when I open the blueprint, wait 5 seconds, then close it. Doing this over and over again causes the ram usage to steadily increase.

First I open up, the usage increases by 10 MB. I close it, I get back 7MB only. So when I repeatedly open and close the blueprint, there is always some MB usage left in the system, causing the mem usage to slowly increase.

Maybe you would like to check it that way.

I will send my dxdiag asap. Thank you again.

Thanks for clarifying your repro steps, however, I was still not able to reproduce the issue when opening and closing the “Core System” blueprint according to the instructions in your message. This includes opening and closing the blueprint “docked” and “floating.”

Please send a copy of your dxdiag and /or further instructions regarding reproducing the issue.

I see. Here is my DxDiag.

I’ve put in a request to have this tested on a similar system as yours. In the mean time I suggest making sure all your drivers are updated as outlined on the following link:

http://www.driverscape.com/manufacturers/msi/laptops-desktops/gt70-2oc-2od/37709

Thank you again mr .

I did what you requested, even used a second driver updater to make sure everything is working. Though I still have the same problem. Sometimes the memory used is given back completely like it should, but most of the time still a little bit left that causes the steady increase. I tested this until 2.3k mb usage.

I will see if something changes along the way, other than that, I will be waiting for the test on your end.

Thanks for submitting your project for testing, however, after extensive testing on a similar machine (and others) we were not able to reproduce the memory leak on our end. Here are a couple of things you can try that may help avoid this issue in the future:

  • Work with the editor in full screen mode and dock the blueprint (and other) windows so that they are not floating
  • (General Practice) Finish the project in Engine Version it was started in. If you must upgrade, create a new project in the latest desired version and migrate assets from the original project. -This takes more work but yields more reliable results and is easier to troubleshoot upgrade issues.

I will be honest with you, as long as this problem is not a general issue, I am fine with it. My laptop is strong enough and close-reopening takes less than 15 seconds do so.

If noone else going to have the same problem, its alright. If a buyer of my product reports the same issue that I have, I will do your second option.

Again thanks for everything and everyone Mr . Glad to have the opportunity to talk with you.
