Hair Splines

Hello Guys.

Since this [video][1] I’m trying to achieve the same result. Here is what I already do until now:

My question is, on some point of video, they said that few hairs on top are splines. How Can I achieve that?
My pipeline is Zbrush → Maya → Unreal.

Also I want to say that this is the best rendition of hair i’ve seen since the 4.11 debut. Can you go over your workflow by any chance? (were these painted, or baked hair geometry? Did you follow the example content Hair directly, or did some kind of variation to it?)
